If medical advances are more your thing, a few 2025 medical advances. Cancer, huntington's, dementia, gene editing, and bladder transplants.
These medical breakthroughs and advances gave patients new hope in 2025
Advances delivered what may feel like medical miracles, including the first bladder transplant, a lifesaving personalized gene therapy and more.

Some of 2025's happy science news (not BIG news, just happy/fun/interesting). Butt breathing, axolotls, floss vaccines, and tiny elephants.
These scientific discoveries brought us joy in 2025
Amidst a tough year for science, glimmers of joy burst through in revelations from the silly to the sublime.

How about “both Mr. Maduro and Mr. Trump denied the results of a national election which they lost, and both returned to power, but through different paths.”
NYT gonna NYT: "Both Mr. Mamdani and Mr. Maduro identify as socialists, though they have no relationship.” — would be funny if they did this every time you write about two capitalists.

"Why are people madder at the Dems than the Reps?"

Skill issue.

I contain such anger and rage I can be madder than the surface of the sun at all of them, all the time. Here, have some I still have spare.

The 12 days of crustose lichens

Day 11: Ochrolechia upsaliensis (Tundra Saucer lichen). I find these little aliens coating moss and other surfaces near the ground in arid rocky sites. Watch out for prickly pears if you're looking for these.

Same with scientists. Each "fun" generative AI thing shared makes me a little less confident in the quality of your research.
Deleted a repost of a thread.

Looking closer, the person is comfortable sharing AI images & video. Was the thread also AI? Was it accurate?

I’d rather not take the chance and share it.

Journalists, keep this in mind. “Fun” AI videos & images undercut your credibility.

I do. And when my husband travels for work he does, especially on the plane. I've caught it once from someone we trusted. He's had it twice, same. Never from "the public" because SCIENCE WORKS!
I still mask up when I’m in closed crowded environments.

Do you?

Every major free speech org has said the IHRA definition suppresses constitutionally protected speech. Every major human rights group has said it suppresses legitimate advocacy. The scandal is that Adams adopted the definition, not that Mamdani rejected it. www.nytimes.com/2026/01/04/n...

ouch. the truthiness hurts
I keep thinking about how Trump has framed this as "law enforcement" -- going to back to my idea of "making the military more like police."
Law enforcement in this country is so violent, acting without regard to public safety, so the goal was the make the military more like cops.

Collins even more incoherent than usual!
Either it was a limited operation merely to arrest Maduro and move on, or, it is an ongoing major regime change committment that will open up a transition including international and private sector partners. It really can't be both

Okay here’s an actual take: the fascist international is at war with the very concept of legitimacy.
Their messaging is so fucking incoherent. Maduro was an illegitimate leader who lost in 2024, which is why we're replacing him with his VP instead of the person who won in 2024. We did this to stop fentanyl, which is why he's indicted for cocaine.

We're also occupying Venezuela via Zoom call.

Bring an elder millennial such that this was a core experience of growing up is a special kind of suck. Though I'd add other "military actions" by both R and D presidents, even if they weren't about oil.

I was about to post stuff from the studio this week when I read the news, so this is a good reminder for me. Pretty excited about a lot of things that should be coming out of the kiln next week! Several of my own glazes!

babe wake up, they're doing insider trading on war crimes
“What appears to be a newly created account appeared to invest $30,000 Friday in Maduro's exit. After Maduro went into custody Saturday morning, that same investor netted $436,759.61.”
Someone made $400K by predicting Maduro's capture. Here's what happened
The winnings come as the rules governing prediction markets are still evolving.

"GETS" that far, Chuck?

Ah, and I see you're going the Susan Collins route on this, "Everybody is very, very just totally, totally, totally troubled." How inspiring, you overcooked unseasoned noodle.
Asked about the possibility of impeachment, Schumer says "we hope that we can have support from our Republican colleagues to put a brake on this long before it gets that far"

The reality of this. Afghanistan/Iraq/Somalia's poorly defined "win conditions" don't hold a CANDLE to this.

This image, purporting to show the US military arresting Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, is AI-generated.

I got up and went to the studio, just got back to WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK?!

Unilaterally kidnapping foreign leaders? Saying we're going to "run" another country?! Saying we're going to try him in our courts under our laws when we've recently decided we can't do that with our OWN president?! The hell!?
