In the decade-plus I've been making my weekly videos, Rebecca was the only developer to have jumped into my comments to clear up a point I was unclear about—then she graciously agreed to be on the podcast. I found her to be as generous and kind as she was talented. It's truly tragic that she's gone.

Rebecca Heineman passed today.

She was a unique talent, to understate things. Anyone could see that in her long list of accomplishments.

But we are not just our catalogs of retail products. She was a force of nature, a light in the darkness.

This is an unimaginable sadness.

half a billion dollars for a police force that still feels the need to shakedown local markets, events, and fairs for protection money
Some breaking news: in a special Vancouver Police Board meeting only announced over the weekend, the police board has requested a $50 million increase to their budget for 2026.

This comes as other departments across the city are trying to cut staff to ensure a property tax freeze for next year.

I love Clint. Last year a hurricane took out his house and huge amounts of his stuff last year, and this refreshingly honest and positive outlook coupled with that soothing voice is a joy.

Thinking back on how it's been, how it's been going, and how I hope it might go in the future. Especially the last part because things are changing — for the better, I hope! Also some home rebuild updates 8 months after the hurricane.

This is a perfect sentence:

"All we’ve gotten in the past decade is example after example of how little these people know about anything other than making apps that destroy something you previously loved, by hollowing it out into a subscription service that no longer works and everyone hates."

Admiring the laconic graphic design in the Half-Life series. Always had a soft spot for the simplicity and restraint in these UIs

Undoubtedly elevated by the superb audio design as well

This was a great week to be a Half-Life fan. So many awesome community projects, a fun celebration from Valve and loads of people sharing memories online. If you'd have told me 20 years after the release of HL2 we'd be getting together to celebrate it, I'd have called that a win.

For anyone who grieves while looking at world events and is asking "What do I do now?", the answer is "the things that are worth doing".

There is reason for despair, but there is always reason for hope. Do good things.
