Another lovely piece of writing, this time on the fruitlessness of engaging with a preexisting narrative and the uneven burden of proof often required from marginalized groups during bothsideism.
In all the new stories i’ve hears about this, i only learned from Mary’s post and replies that the farm was hiding dead birds/was inspected after an anonymous call.
This farm apparently hid their outbreak. The best thing that could happen for other farmers is for the CFIA to come down like a ton of bricks on any farm that does that. No compensation for lost livestock, lose all their permits, huge fines, etc. Scorched earth when a farm doesn't report outbreaks.
Katie Pasitney, whose mother co-owns the British Columbia ostrich farm where hundreds of the birds were shot dead in a cull ordered by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, says she is focused on creating change for other farmers.

We must note that all the condemnation of Tucker Carlson platforming Nick Fuentes has been about anti-Semitism and there has been an alarming and revealing silence around his anti-Black racism and white supremacy. When the head of the Heritage Foundation apologized, he only cited anti-Semitism.

Regarding Prime Minister Carney’s federal budget: I don’t pretend to fully know it, and there are elements that concern me, but if I were the NDP I’d pledge to support it if a significant investment in urban public transit (nation-building, climate etc) was added, and if I were PM Carney I’d agree.

Having been employed at the same clinic as @guyfelicella.bsky.social when i started working in the dtes, guy has always been a tireless advocate for people who are ignored, misunderstood and mistreated. Postmedia pulling his op piece for flimsy defamation concerns is ridiculous but not surprising.
Open letter to Postmedia and @calgaryherald.com to call for the OpEd by @guyfelicella.bsky.social to be republished immediately. Silencing people with lived experience is not in keeping with journalistic standards silences us all.

We, the undersigned, are writing to you in regard to an opinion article by Mr. Guy Felicella [ Reprinted here by the Breakdown ] that was published in the Calgary Herald on October 1, 2025, but was subsequently removed without this being communicated to the writer. We ask that this article is re-published immediately and that an apology is issued. Mr. Felicella wrote his article in response to a previous opinion piece by Mr. Marshall Smith , the former chief of staff of the Premier of Alberta, published in the Calgary Herald on September 23, 2025, entitled “Opinion: Banning public drug use is bold, courageous and obvious”. This letter does not mean to address the substance of Mr. Smith’s or Mr. Felicella’s articles, but rather the issue of freedom of speech and freedom of the press. As a person with considerable lived experience in substance use and as an advocate who bridges harm reduction and recovery, Mr. Felicella expressed his concern over Mr. Smith’s approach. In his article Mr. Felicella did not defame, slander or misrepresent facts. He offered a different perspective that is informed by lived experience of substance use, near death from toxic drugs and his recovery journey. Opinion sections in Canadian newspapers are supposed to offer differing opinions, not only those that are in line with the editorial board or of people with power and influence.
