Summaring the problems in every maths department.
I think the belief by the powerful that "people will put up with many things if you are excellent at math" is incredibly revealing in terms of understanding How We Got Here

Teaching friends, advice please? I have this calculus student who fancies himself a hotshot. During group work at whiteboards he often takes charge, assumes a teacher role, and lectures other students. Other students have told me that they find this condescending and don't want to work with him. 1/

I really think the appropriate response here is not "bullshit, its not intelligent nor conscious" (because the answer will simply and boringly depend on your definition of "intelligent" and "conscious") but rather "we're wasting our time arguing about this"
In @nytopinion.nytimes.com

“A.I. is no less a form of intelligence than digital photography is a form of photography,” the philosopher Barbara Gail Montero writes in a guest essay. “And now A.I. is on its way to doing something even more remarkable: becoming conscious.”

I have studied enough philosophy to know that we simply don't have to care about whether AI is ""conscious"". This whole argument is so much more about the definition of "consciousness" than about AI and, no offense to philosophers,
Can we just stop please? Just let it go. We are not anywhere close to “conscious” machines.

We’re going to look back on hot takes like this in 20 years and wonder how people fell for such clear fairytales.

TIL stimulants like Adderall reduces risk of dementia in people with ADHD to neurotypical levels.

So gimme those drugs.
ADHD increases dementia risk, but the available epidemiological data suggests that stimulant medications may normalize risk. Totally fascinating

I mean, do we count the reporting on trans issues over the past 5-10 years already as part of this fasho sympathizer era of the NYT?
I honestly don't think the NY Times has been this bad in my lifetime, it's deeply shameful.

Any Open Science Foundation users know what "Date Modified" in the meta data refers to? osf.io/xcaq3/files/...

Reviewer pointed out that it was Sept 25th this year (way after data collection ended), but I don't recall updating it, and there is also nothing in the "Revisions" tab.

Hive mind, could you point me to any papers that report pursuit gains for fast-ish target speeds (30 - 45°/s)? A reviewer admonishes that our gains are unheard-of-ly close to 1 and I want to check how unheard of they are exactly 😊

Rare relatable Holyday moment, don't we all wish proposals at City Hall were better

It never ceases to amaze me how business owners are often so caught up in their class identity that they're willing to cut into their own profits
Letter attached to item from the Casa Loma Residents Association expresses opposition to the no-stopping restrictions. "How are customers to shop there if there is No Stopping between 2 pm and 7 pm Monday to Friday and 12 pm and 7 pm on weekends?" they wonder. www.toronto.ca/legdocs/mmis... (PDF)

As a sidenote, a 46% ~return on investment~ is actually not even that impressive when it comes to stuff governments can spend money on. Public transport projects tend to have extremely high RoIs, for example. Government spending is good, actually!

Not holding my breath for universities, especially Ivy League suckers, to do the right thing
First Trump blackmailed universities into suppressing free speech. Now he’s bribing them with taxpayer dollars to enforce his agenda. Corruption and authoritarianism, plain and simple.

No university should cave to this blatantly unconstitutional coercion.
