Cornell agrees to "invest" $30 million in things like AI farming.

Cornell also agrees to pay $30 million to the U.S. for no clear reason or purpose.

heads up to anyone who holds trans kids near: amy harmon from the nyt is searching for and having a hard time finding people to interview to find out exactly what trans kids are doing when their care is limited or cut off, and for purposes of community safety, please shut the fuck up around her.

New today: We're petitioning NSF to revert GRFP eligibility criteria to last year's terms, to avoid pulling the rug out from under the earliest of early-career scientists who had every reason to think they'd be able to apply this year. Sign and spread the word!

I've said this before, but I feel pretty strongly that the building of concentration camps - and now, the inevitable disappearance of 1,800 people from those camps - is the biggest story in American public health right now that isn't being treated like one

Huh, so it *wasn't* about antisemitism. I'm shocked. Shocked!

The goal all along has been destroying higher education. They have said so explicitly. And we've had media outlets carry water for lies about "protecting Jewish students."
Linda McMahon on Columbia settlement: "This is a monumental victory for conservatives who wanted to do things on these elite campuses for a long time because we had such far left-leaning professors."

Based on some quick math, this alone could fund the NSF Plant Genome Research Program for ~4 years; the NSF Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Biology, which was totally axed in the NSF budget request, for ~9 years; and ~ half the total NSF GRFP budget

not the main issue here but i'd really appreciate it if democratic politicians spoke out in support of big-city life and culture with the same energy and reverence that all politicians have for small towns

los angeles is "real america" and so are all the other big cities the president hates

1. Florida banned cities from lighting up bridges rainbow colors for Pride.

So the people of Jacksonville did it themselves using flashlights and gels.

They opened the drawbridge to block them.

So they marched to a different bridge.

My version of the Eight of Wands features;
• Cosmos for harmony and balance.
• Oenothera for inconstancy
• Aquamarine for the strength to go with the flow.

We need to bring back 1st wave coffee shops. Draw the menu on a blackboard, fill the place with mismatched thrift store furniture and fill a cup with the most burned-ass drip french roast for $2. Have a high school kid out front playing chess with a homeless guy. Bonus if a stray cat wanders around.

My NSF PRFB on the genetics of female polymorphism in hummingbirds was terminated yesterday.

I don't have much to say, I'm just sad. We've discovered so much, and could have gone so much further.

If anyone else is in the same boat, esp postdocs, please reach out, it would be good to connect.

Remember: NOAA is not its social media accounts. Do not let the takeover of NOAA communications take away your support of the real NOAA and the very real scientists behind it. The administration would want nothing more than for us to stop supporting our science agencies 🧪

When the U.S. withdrew from WHO, prominent voices in public health reached for the wrong talking point - "Okay, you're right, WHO is flawed / inefficient, so, reform it." My undergrads now repeat this back to me, with no understanding of why they believe that. This can't happen to NIH/NSF. Instead:
This has never been about efficiency.

The NIH is a remarkably efficient organization.

No, this has all been about destroying our investment in science and academia.
“Mr. Musk’s cuts to the bureaucracy will cost taxpayers $135 billion this fiscal year.”

That is 3 times the entire NIH budget

Toxicologist here! This will improve the health of zero Americans. Current synthetic food dyes are not causing health problems, and are often times used because they are actually safer than natural food dyes. Reminder that guns are the #1 cause of death of children but we are going to ban food dyes.
BREAKING: The FDA has officially announced they will be banning artificial dyes in the food supply by the end of 2026

This includes Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, Blue 1, Blue 2, Green 3
