25 years ago today, SCOTUS elected George W Bush president of the United States by blocking completion of a voting canvass in Florida. A subsequent canvass by the Associated Press showed that Bush's rival, Al Gore, had won the race in Florida—and thus the contest for the presidency—by 700 votes.

Pathetic. Our US military budget is an obscenity and with this administration in charge, voting for this should be seen as enabling war crimes. Everyone who voted for this, including the Democrats, is absolute garbage.
As Trump drags us into an Iraq-style war in Venezuela, 312 members of the House — including 115 Democrats — just voted to authorize over $900 billion in military spending.

They're using the confinement box, one of the most horrific methods of CIA torture in the post-9/11 black sites, against migrants now. This is the direct result of the lack of consequences for the architects of the torture program. Either there will be criminal penalties for this or it will expand.

OMFG.

A post-C section mother who was an asylum seeker seeking a visa for crime victims who had a newborn baby struggling in the NICU was held in Broadview in Chicago w no medical attention (POST C SECTION), no breast pump (right after birth), and no treatment for her diabetes.

MONSTERS.
“Guzmán’s daughter was still in the NICU, unable to eat or breathe independently. The doctors had planned a meeting to review the baby’s prognosis and care plans… As Guzmán went to buckle her seatbelt, she looked out the window and noticed they were surrounded.”
Her baby was in the NICU. She was in ICE detention.
Before Trump took office, postpartum immigrants were rarely detained by ICE. Nayra Guzmán was detained while her 15-day-old baby was in the NICU.

The tools v. technology take is spot on and it's not just human agency at stake but what it means to be distinctively human.

AI can be yet another way we dehumanize education.
This really is a must read for anyone in academia.

"All is lost" narratives are popular because people generally do not want to take action. Taking action is tiring so if all is lost, you are off the hook. Nothing is more seductive than not having to do anything.

A less-discussed thing here: It's harder to grok in the initial clip, but a wider Fox Business shot shows it was Vice President Vance who led the table-rapping celebration at the end of Trump's remarks on Somalis here.

Vance can then be seen raising his fist and saying, "Yes."
