OK people are talking about #gardening as a response to economic crisis and I see we are doing the "subsistence agriculture is hard, actually" disk horse again and I have a *bunch* of thoughts on this which I am going to put into a thread here so my ADHD brain will let me do the next task. 1/?

Anyway, we could do with more bishops like him (not necessarily the attack swan thing, although….)

Today is the feast of St Hugh of Lincoln, bishop, advocate for justice for the dispossessed, for peace and against pogroms. Rebuilder of churches, encourager of education.

Also the man who made friends with a swan, which loved and wanted to protect him, and seems to have hated every else…

A policy that will raise virtually no money (what, is the Home Office going to have an eBay & Pawn Shops Officer now?) and has historical resonances that, at best, leave most people feeling a little uncomfortable…

Plus, the far right will still say ‘Woke Open Borders Labour.’
The Sun has been told Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood will on Monday propose confiscating jewellery, watches, necklaces from asylum seekers to meet asylum costs

This reflects the most controversial aspect of the Danish scheme - the Jewellery Law. The toughest Labour MPs thought this was OTT

Watching BBC breakfast now and there have been 8 white people in a row. If 3 in a row is only 50/50, 8 in a row must be rare? Nope. Do the maths. There's about a 16% chance of that. So it's a little unusual but very much not rare. That's twice as likely as one person on screen being a ginger (5)

Three in a row is 0.512 - so in a country that's 80% white there's a 50/50 chance that with three people on screen, chosen randomly, one isn't white (4)

So there's an 8 in 10 chance a random person is white. Expressed as a probability that's 0.8. Two in a row is 0.8x0.8, 0.64. So about a third of the time one of them won't be white. By chance alone (3)

@london.gov.uk Hey, what can you do to help asylum seekers in London? Things are looking pretty bad.

This is heartbreaking, immoral and disgusting. These stories expose the lie at the heart of every claim to be opposed to children's healthcare in the name of those same children's safety.
NHS Sussex are forcibly detransitioning trans people. These patients need full restoration of their healthcare, and everyone involved in doing this needs to be sacked.
"Laura fears all will be lost if ICB Sussex forces her child off the medication.

If ICB Sussex get their own way in a matter of weeks and they force detransition, Olive may well take her life."

This makes me feel physically sick. No MP should support any of these measures until they have spent a month each working in asylum detention and with unhoused people.
How dare she call this 'moral'? It's disgraceful.

Buying up masses of property and then renting it back while helping house sales prices high is just a win win for landlords, they control more and more of the cost, the conditions of sale, the market, and it makes home ownership fucking impossible for everyone.

Almost always, in my experience, ethics and good system design are the same thing. And all of the flavors of oppression are bad on both counts.
Patriarchy is a systems trap. It breaks the feedback loops needed for health and balance, it cuts off early warnings and silences sensing elements.

At some point, for the love of God, will someone ANYONE at long last take the council funding crisis seriously?!?

Because THIS is what will break down a society, not some poor soul escaping incredible dangers, arriving on our shores.

What a truly vile and hateful set of people we have running the country.
If the government really intends to seize jewellery and other valuables from refugees,
either
- it is staggeringly ignorant of the historical precedents
or
- it's aware of the precedents, and thinks, yeah, we'll have some of that.

The far right aren’t bothered about the finer points of asylum rules they simply want NO people of colour to be in their field of vision at any time, and Shabana that means you. Trying to capitulate like this achieves NOTHING other than contributing more to the climate of hate.

Absolutely disgusting
To reiterate, this is about making life immeasurably more miserable and stressful for some of the most vulnerable people, in the almost certainly vain hope of winning over the votes of racists.

Anything more shabby and shameful is difficult to envisage.

I do personally believe that churches have the right to set dress codes for visitors, including tourists.

But those should be set based on “what is respectful to the religion as practiced here” and not “what does a given security guard think might scare tourists”
