EU Commission President's anual "State of the European Union" speech means an update to my dataviz analysing the languages used.

To the chagrin of some, it was again a predominantly English address, even more so than 2 years ago.

German and French got <4 min. each.

I know most of my followers will be familiar with the story of Giovanni Falcone but for those who did not follow me in the other place and don't know it, I have transferred my thread from there over here. Warning, it is a very long thread (200+ posts) but worth the effort to read.
33 years ago, on 23rd May 1992, Giovanni Falcone is assassinated, along with Francesca Morvillo, Vito Schifani, Rocco Dicillo and Antonio Montinaro. This thread tells the story of how he is undermined, isolated and abandoned to his destiny by the state he so loyally serves >> 1

Of course this will affect Europe, though probably not in the same way as in 2008.

But for 40 years Europeans have been told by so many policymakers in the US and UK that they should emulate an American model that is now heading to self-destruction. A lesson there for future EU policy too.
But also remember that the subprime crisis of 2008 led straight to the Eurozone crisis of 2010 onwards. I am not sure there will be much space for European Schadenfreude if the US economy implodes.
Welcome to the Dollarzone Crisis

A fun stat from me in this week's Economist. Since the election, right-wing Britons have been turning to e-petitions: www.economist.com/britain/2025... When you're out of power, slacktivism is cathartic!

Hey @arnoldplaton.bsky.social , a Romanian who writes in Spanish and Catalan has won an important literary prize. And her day job is teaching English in a small town school. Writers who choose a language not their own are interesting almost by definition

My one constructive criticism on BlueSky, as a community: we need to “like” less and “retweet” more. In the absence of an algorithm, that’s the way we find each other and reward good content.

Nations have always been immensely diverse collections of people who don't agree with each other on tons of things. But despite those differences, the nation existed in their minds, an entity in whose existence they believed in part because media enabled them to see it.

How might we know you already?
What have you done that we might have seen or read before?
What would help us remember how we came across you?

Another great tool by @zeit.de, this time for polls on the German elections.

For now, it confirms that the best chances for a majority are with the CDU/CSU + SPD option, but much I expect polls still to move significantly.

Since Commission President von der Leyen has now joined this place, here is a visualisation I've been making for a few years now on the languages she and her predecessors used in the annual State of European Union address in the plenary chamber of the 🇪🇺 Parliament

I suspect no such speech this year
