As usual in history, the massive intelligence failure on Oct 07 wasn't caused by a lack of information but rather by a failure to interpret it correctly. Oct 07 was a brilliant tactical success for Hamas, one which has led to a strategic defeat and a catastrophe for Gaza Palestinians

good point. the downside of it is that it's hard to meet a Spaniard that doesn't think that the country lags far behind the rest of Europe in pretty much every way, and the UK too🤣. And plenty think the economic and political situation is catastrophic
Spain is thriving now because 1898, and then 1975, left it as the big Western state with the fewest illusions about its place in the world. That's why, today, it's the European player with the most globally open and realistic foreign policy.
From the Spanish point of view, this is very particular. Spain is not immune to the reactionary wave, but it’s interesting how the 2008 crisis is shaking the west much like the disaster of 1898 did to Spain:

Just noticed the small hardware shop round the corner has closed. No idea how long it was there, decades, probably. Odds are it’ll become yet another phone shop or mini supermarket, both destined to rarely see a customer. I’m radically pro-immigrant, but not stupid.

once my wife signed loyalty to the Spanish constitution all she had to do was make an appointment with the cops to get her ID card. Show up with ref number, have photo taken, wait a while, receive ID card. With ID card rinse and repeat for the passport. That's the slow moving Spanish bureaucracy !!
genuinely incredible to me that jovi's passport approval hinges on a zoom call where they'll ask her how many windows our house has, or what colour the doctor's surgery is, or where the nearest post box is located. roll on monday

Looking at the Boca- River classic. Disjointed play. Constant fouls ranging from niggles to GBH. Mouthing at the ref. Oscar level feigning injury. It's a wonder that so many Argentine players are successful abroad when they learn to play in this context

my mother's strategy for dealing with the winter cold was to cover us with so many layers of bedclothes that movement was near impossible 🤣
Funny seeing the responses to this from British people who are like “my dad’s family didn’t have central heating until the 1960s!”

Glad that someone has finally taken responsibility for the appalling assault on democracy that was the Jan. 6 insurrection.
Slightly confused that it's the Director-General of the BBC, but what do I know?

As the great John Henry Newman argued, a university is not a factory for churning out knowledge, but a haven for cultivating wisdom, breadth of vision, and unquestioning submission to the foreign policy aims of the nation where it’s located
