There will be no foreign forces of any meaningful sort deployed in Gaza. Maybe a company of Indonesian dental technicians, nothing more. Claims like this rest on the notion that Israel is a colonial outpost that relies on external support for its survival

yes, the GFA didn't establish the right of NI ppl to have Irish nationality if they wanted, it was always there.
I’ve always had an Irish passport - only because of a school trip to Paris in secondary school where the school arranged for all pupils to have them. Post Brexit, I’m so glad. My son (born in London) has both a British and a Irish one, the latter makes international travel so much easier.
This report is largely about Irish passport applications from people living in GB, but the continuing high number of new passport applications from NI is remarkable. There have been really profound identity shifts enabling huge numbers to formally assert being Irish:

Maybe there was something to be said for a period of silence from the UK Chancellor before a budget.

If you are a govt with a huge majority in a system with scant checks on parliamentary power you can do *what you want*. If the public don't like it they can voté against you at the next election, so what? And all this pledge talk is absurd, as if it were a solemn religious vow
Too much analysis was still treating breaking the tax pledge as “just another unpopular decision” rather than recognising consequence of breaking a promise which defined an election for the public. If is correct the govt won’t now break it they may have avoided a deeply scarring loss of public trust

What the fuck is wrong with these people? I can't think of a government with a big majority in any democratic country so afflicted by fainting fits

The fact that a guy called Nick Fuentes can be a prominent white supremacist in the US suggests that a lot of US white supremacists are a few bricks short of a load

No Brit thinkpiece about Spain can be published without a paragraph of thoughts from Mrs Nick Clegg. It's in the unwritten constitution they have. The Economist does its duty. Aforamiento btw is just parliamentary immunity, common in democratic states

Peronismo is a second layer of national and personal identity. It accommodates all political ideologies and none. It's not a political party
I keep trying to find an English-dubbed video of the Kirchner '05 speech where Bush looks completely horrified & furious, but it's surprisingly difficult! The wonder of the internet... As TW points out, Argentina is odd - its neoliberal and pink tide turns were conducted by the same Peronist party.

A very kumbaya account of the transition to democracy in Spain. We live with consequences of the failure to purge the core elements of the regime to this day

This would not have happened under a climate change denying PP/Vox government. If they win the next election further progress will be stalled. Spain can be a clean energy super power, with all the huge opportunities that presents, but not if the right takes control.
Spain’s rapid deployment of wind and solar energy has slashed the influence of expensive gas and coal plants on electricity prices by 75% since 2019..... As a result, the country is now one of the cheapest electricity markets in Europe.

In numbers: Renewables have turned Spain into one of Europe's cheapest electricity markets
Wind and solar met almost half of Spain’s electricity demand in the first half of 2025 (46%), up from 27% in the same period in 2019.
