When I was an exchange student in Bavaria in the 1980s, my teachers still remember how the American GIs fed them when they were hungry
Once upon a time, American soldiers handed out food to Germans because *they* had followed a fascist madman into national ruin.
How times change.
How times change.
NEW: The US Army website for its bases in Bavaria, Germany told its soldiers and employees that it might need to obtain free food from the German government during the US government shutdown.
The Army later altered publication to remove a list of food banks, but we have the original text here:

This feels like those stories from the Vietnam War where Generals in DC would send hundreds of GIs to their death over a hill significant only because it had a surveyed elevation, only to abandon the hill a week later.

One thing I don't hear or read academics discussing enough is the sheer weirdness that results from the entire world having access to your work via the Internet. I can't be the only one who ends up being cited in works about subjects that I barely recognize, much less am citable in.

I wish financial planners would stop warning ppl about the "OAS clawback"
The OAS is the residue of a pension, launched in 1926, to relieve starvation among the very poor
Now, it (and GIS) helps those people, but also ppl with modest savings/pensions
It's 'clawed back' from the very comfortable

for Veterans Day, the very short story of my grandfather’s heroic service in World War II:
there were fears that the Russians would invade Alaska (there are always fears that the Russians will invade Alaska) so a number of U.S. GIs were stationed there just in case, my grandfather Harry among them.

Lots of newcomers to basic income learning the truth:
- 0 studies showed major drop in work
- saves taxpayers $ long-run (cheaper than poverty)
- most Canadians benefited from some sort of basic income (CCB, GIS)
- people in AI pretty much all support UBI
- it's not left or right (see Alaska's UBI)

So disgusting because so many people really believe this one man really cared about them. His whole life has shown he never paid gis bills in full, left people struggling. Abused as many people as he wanted. Used his name to profit but never did one honest day's work in his life. Do your homework

That's mostly Stubbs in this case, though we get a bit from the perspective of his target - a con-man who specialized in ripping off newly flush GIs after the war. I love the tight, sardonic passages Stark uses to show us how scams work.
