yes! Specifically, it leaves us vulnerable to the strategy devised by fascist Carl Schmitt: find the edges, gaps, and voids in a society where the rule of law doesn’t run and “us” becomes “them,” then *push them inwards*, until these places of exception become the norm and the rule of law is dead. 🧵
this conception of what constitutes a nation is inherently toxic and necessarily leaves the door open for the growth and development of the border fascism we now find ourselves suffering through
Trump's re-election campaign is going to be running favorable quotes from ... [checks notes] ... Senator Bernie Sanders.

Real ones remember the Bowl of Fate. (They got a nice one from the VMFA or something, as I recall.)
Oh and one last thing from 2017; y’all remember the Democrat who tied the House of Delegates majority-determining race in a recount but lost in a tie-breaking, film canister drawing from a bowl in Newport News? (Look it up.)
Yeah, Del. Shelly Simonds (D) just earned her fourth term to the House too.

I participated in an event for @rvamag.bsky.social two weeks ago and was asked if authoritarianism is inevitable in America.

Let yesterday be a reminder that when we fight, we win, and authoritarianism is never inevitable.

It's so vitally important to our entire national politics these days to just pretend that nobody on the left feels, or is allowed to feel, a really deep hatred toward the tyrants and war criminals who have spent the last twenty five years destroying the future
meanwhile the words: "Every time one of these murderers dies w/o having faced consequences for the massacres they ordered, the lives they destroyed, the societies they razed to the ground I realize how far we are from a world with justice. Rest in hell Dick Cheney. Your legacy is death."

This isn’t too far from how Northam’s term went. We love to elect moderate govs whose job is to say milquetoast things while the General Assembly sends them an unbroken stream of the libbest shit imaginable to sign, and honestly it’s not the worst dynamic from a small-d democratic perspective
glad for the Spanberger win, though it would be pretty difficult to come up with a non-fascist candidate I dislike more. hopeful the rest of these races play out in a way that her hands are basically tied to the legislative Dem’s agenda.

Similarly, I-81 in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley parallels US-11, which follows the 18th century Great Wagon Road, which follows a pre-Contact trade route, which followed ancient bison migration routes. The city of Roanoke is located at a salt lick that attracted game.

(Good 🧵 btw)
With some apology to Robert Frost, when two roads diverge in a wood, statistically, there are a lot of people who will go either way. We're weird like that.

I have a thread here that explains how deer, not city planners, are responsible for the path of New York City's Broadway.
The Lenape people used an island they called ''Manahatta" as a shared hunting ground. Footpaths of game & hunters around wetlands and marshes followed a high ridge near the central part of the island called the Wickquasgeck Trail.

The Dutch purchased the island 1624 (from the wrong Lenape, btw)...

Dems don’t need to copy his politics or even necessarily his campaign strategy, they need to learn how to grow a fucking spine.
