“Never let a good idea die.”
Sen. Danica Roem, D-Manassas, is pitching a bill for the sixth time that would tighten limits on how much state and local governments can charge for public records and clarify how agencies seek court relief when responding to large or complex requests. virginiamercury.com/2026/01/05/p...

“The Virginia (FOIA) is consistently treated as a burden by government officials rather than a necessary obligation of government to its citizens,” she said. “It needs to be seen as a vital, important government service, as opposed to an administrative burden.”

Once again, Congress has vigorously asserted itself in its official capacity to act as an elected suggestion box.

The majority isn't serving as a co-equal branch of government. It's just a 200-something-member presidential rewards card as those members each collect six-digit salaries for shrugging.

Happy New Year, Virginia! Our minimum wage just went up to $12.77/hour.

Our incoming Democratic trifecta this year is set to pass HB 1 / SB 1 to finally win the #fightfor15 by increasing the minimum wage to $13.75 Jan. 1, 2027 and $15 Jan. 1, 2028, and then increasing that annually for inflation.

I emceed a D.C. event.

Me: “Our next speaker literally needs no introduction. Bernie’s here, y’all!”

Bernie walks on stage, shakes my hand, says, “Great intro” and starts his speech.

On a separate occasion, I gave a half-wave to Bernie at DCA. He nodded back.

And those are my two Bernie stories.
Right folks. Feeling rather down at the moment so bringing back an oldie

I’m on the penultimate chapter of former Finnish PM Sanna Marin’s memoir and, as a legislator who’s been working to get universal free school meals in Virginia, it floors me to see her note that free school lunch in Finland has been around since *1948.*
Can’t wait for us to catch up to 1948 Finland…

Virginia is subsidizing a multi-trillion dollar industry with a $1.6B tax break at a time when we’re trying to determine how we’re going to backfill the federal cuts to SNAP and Medicaid.
Once again, I’ll be introducing a budget amendment to end this exemption.

The last two times I went to donate blood, my iron was a bit too low (when you’re on a vegan diet, you’ve got to be really intentional about this stuff).
This, of course, is a terrible news for a metalhead — “I’m not metal enough?!”
Three months, I’m metal enough again. Up the irons. \m/ #OfOneBlood

As a reporter-turned-legislator, I find the need to point out: quality journalism always finds a way to sunlight.

Good reporting by the actual journalists at 60 Minutes and nice job by some Canadians for getting the story over the border.

As Mike Muir would sing, “You / Can’t / Bring / Me / Down!”

Andrea and I learned how to run together during the @victoryinstitute.bsky.social’s 2016 training program. On Nov. 7, 2017, we both made history, winning together.
We’ve crossed paths several times and it’s been such a joy. I wish the absolute best for her retirement.

Today, I led hundreds of my constituents in Bristow on a march along a trail through the woods to rally against the data center transmission line that would destroy a huge swath of the community‘s green space.

I vehemently and unequivocally oppose the Dulles South Innovation Center in its entirety and I’ll work with whoever it takes to defeat it.

Kids get fed, parents save hundreds of dollars per kid per school year and school staffers have one less administrative burden.

Virginia’s Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov dreamed of becoming a neurosurgeon after overcoming his own childhood health struggles. He and his fellow Brown student Ella Cook, of Alabama, both had promising futures cut tragically short. We must do more to stop these horrific shootings.
Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, a freshman at Brown, had a condition as a child that required brain surgery. The experience created an unshakable ambition to become a brain surgeon, his sister said.

He died after being shot on campus on Saturday.

For the second time in the last month, I walked with my Bristow constituents this a.m. through the area where Dominion is proposing a transmission line that would clearcut a huge portion of what’s left of the woods in that part of Braemar to power data centers.

Governor-elect Spanberger and the General Assembly should seize this moment and pass S.B.4 and/or its House companion bill. When Virginia’s children look back on 2026, they should remember it as the year their state decided that no student would go hungry on the way to building their future.
