Teaching people how to think critically through reading and analysis -- which is the core of a liberal education -- is a radical act.

Teaching them to write cogently and persuasively is revolutionary.

Both threaten the authority and influence of the commentariat.

My dad always had this philosophy that "Christmas is not for us," i.e., the whole point of the thing was making it good for other people, and that is where the enjoyment comes from. Works the same for other holidays, too. Be grateful if you are the one who can provide the happiness.

Something I’ve been thinking about as well.
This is a really nice piece on what it means to make art in an era where the idea that someone will pay you for it or that tons of people might see it seems to be going away.

Anyone currently involved in federal immigration enforcement, every officer, every bureaucrat, every lawyer, every judge, is a member of the most evil group of people this country has seen since Reconstruction. Darkness personified, every one. Doing this to children is beyond depraved.
On Thanksgiving, the immigrant children held at the Dilley detention center gathered in the gym for what they thought was a holiday feast.

The kids salivated over a spread of turkey, sandwiches, pastries and pies, a family told me.

But the food wasn’t for detainees — it was for the staff.

The federal minimum wage has been stuck at $7.25 since 2009 — that’s about the cost of a latte today.

There’s nothing radical about believing an hour of someone’s labor is worth more than a cup of coffee.

I haven't been watching THE PITT, but I guess I need to. My mother has schizophrenia, and I have to agree with you that it is complicated and awful (and wildly misunderstood by the general public.)

A quick reminder to set your phone to passcode only.
And if you have an iPhone and you have the sinking realization as the federal agent is bearing down on you that you forgot to disable biometrics: hit the right-side down button 5x very quickly to enter the power down menu.
Reminder- turn biometric locks on your phone OFF, and shift to a passcode if you think you’ll be in any situation where you’d be filming.

A 76-year-old veteran and nurse was tackled and detained at the site of Alex Pretti's killing. Agents told him his phone was evidence in an investigation into him assaulting an officer.

respectable middle class professionals online love to point out that someone is public about their sexuality or kink as a way to discount their entire humanity and it really amazes me how they don't seem to realize it makes them look like bigots to people who haven't had their souls starched

The number of times a math teacher—usually well-intentioned!—told me that I would Need This As An Adult…

Do you know how many times in life I’ve actually had to find a cosine? Or how little the quadratic equation has figured into my existence?
Those who weren’t resigned to the Math Idiot Garbage Bin as kids may not grasp how much “if you’re bad at math, you’ll die in a ditch and all will be better off for it” sentiment was floating around in the 90s and 2000s, but it sure felt real to me.

(my parents are great! It didn’t come from them!)

If these MFers actually wanted to "protect kids", they would:

Pass gun control
Stop demonizing vaccines
Fund education and healthcare
Punish every single creep in the Epstein files

Censoring the internet does nothing to actually help kids. It only makes them ignorant.

U.K. might lose a prime minister because a guy who worked for him knew another guy who hung out with Epstein. Meanwhile the U.S. opposition party is telling our President, who was Epstein's best friend, that his secret police should get better training so their public street murders look less messy.
