It just feels like a very difficult phase of life we don’t handle very well at all in the UK (*gestures at the social care system*) and housing should be a big part of changing that

The UK, where the day after a decision to take half a million children out of poverty, the media & political world has been full of sneering at those same children & their families, labelling them as ‘Benefits Street’, while the same people are moaning about a tax on £2m mansions. Shameful stuff.

The war will end when Russia stops fighting. Therefore, pressure has to be put on Russia, so that they stop believing that they will win. Why is that so hard to understand?

The map on the left shades constituencies by % of top council tax band properties (Band H in England, Band H and I in Wales)

The map on the right shades by median house prices.

Very different maps. That's the problem with council tax.

This fact is completely believable to any European who has driven in the states in the last decade. It's terrifying!
Insane but true fact: making US roads as safe as Canadian, Australian, or European roads would save more lives than eliminating murder from the US.

I am about the most boringly law abiding person i know. I'm the type who leaves the correct change on top of a broken parking meter. Preventing the deportation of a 15 year old child, born and raised in my community, a friend of my kids say, would push me to direct action and take the consequences.
The Labour government does not want to rule out deporting somebody once here as a refugee 16-19 years with a British-born 15 year old child

This is a genius metaphor. 🫡
All of the societal effort that goes into making the wealthy happy is like if every year 50% of the money generated in Canada went towards teaching thousands of dogs to become cardiothoracic surgeons.

It's not going to happen, it hardly creates any jobs, and it's fucking up the dogs.

Oh wow. At this point I genuinely don't know who or what they think they're in government for.

Please tax me more.

I want nice things that work. I want security for people that aren't doing as well as me. I want investment in a positive future.

Please put up my income tax.

The UK just passed 20 GW of solar power! ☀️

That means more clean electricity and fewer carbon emissions with over 1.4 GW added this year!

Next stop: the upcoming CfD rounds... a key step to keeping the momentum going 📈
UK solar capacity hits 20 GW
Major milestone for UK solar deployment as 15 CfD-backed projects switch on during the first three quarters of 2025. Further utility-scale deployment is expected, but much will depend on the outcomes ...

Sometimes I think the biggest challenge for progressives in the UK is not how to get Zack/Keir/Ed elected but how to get Andy Street and those like him elected again.
Andy Street, former Mayor of the West Midlands, sets Robert Jenrick @robertjenrickmp.bsky.social straight on integration in Handsworth and claims of it being a slum.

London is meeting legal limits for toxic NO2 pollution for the first time – almost 200 years earlier than predicted – following the Mayor’s "world leading air pollution policies," City Hall announces.

The Ultra Low Emissions Zone - and similar policies - really do work.

Buckle is just correct about reactionary centrists in the UK, they are a genuine threat to our democracy and will have us down the same path as the USA. Seeing how much of the authoritarian drive in the US has been due to elite acquiescence has shaken me.

A term favoured by US progressives can help us understand Britain’s drift to the right
