I'm not sure this is right. Isnt the average 20 year old saver building up a deposit on a first home and hence (at least outside London) got a < 5yr time horizon on withdrawal? Pension saving on the other hand is probably best done through a pension not any kind of ISA.

It just feels like a very difficult phase of life we don’t handle very well at all in the UK (*gestures at the social care system*) and housing should be a big part of changing that

Not sure i agree with that in general. I've used the mumsnet forum as a resource before when dealing with a screaming baby at 3am, there are threads there which are both informative and reassuring for new parents if you look for them.

Didn't the government already say the tax can be rolled up until the house is sold in cases like this?

And as per the Chancellor's example, someone saving every year will be insulated from almost all those edge cases where cash beats stocks.

Even those who like the sound of these policies will hate many of the individual examples of inhumanity they create. "Oh we didn't think you meant little Jimmy. Little Jimmy is one of us"

Whats the status of the Clean Heat Market Mechanism these days? Policy changes so fast I've lost track a bit but hopefully that can mitigate the downside of an ugly cliff edge ending to BUS?

But still 0% on hot takeaways right?

Oh wow. At this point I genuinely don't know who or what they think they're in government for.

Please tax me more.

I want nice things that work. I want security for people that aren't doing as well as me. I want investment in a positive future.

Please put up my income tax.

This is key, tax should be seen as a total system. As long as the overall fiscal framework incentivises EVs that doesnt mean every individual rule within that framework needs to do so.

Just like 0% VAT on children's clothes is a bad/inefficient way to make the overall system progressive.

Maybe I'm naive but surely with all the monstrously difficult decisions in this budget, fuel duty has to finally rise? Right? Right? 😬

I guess by unachievable politically i mean I would expect the government to buckle and for it to get u-turned pasty tax style rather than force a no-confidence vote on it.

Totally agree on the fuel duty point, my view that this is actually a pragmatic policy is premised on no more fuel duty freeze

(Just wish we had a smart version which differentiated geographically and temporally to reduce congestion)

I'm with James on this. The best mechanism to incentivise EV transition is the ZEV mandate. Crucial though that as it pushes transition EV's have some way to pay for their externalities. Applying a per mile charge on legacy ICE cars alongside fuel duty is not politically feasible, hence this.☝️

I get your point economically but i think its unachievable politically (without big cuts to fuel duty). Given that, the policy floated is a reasonable path to where we need to get to.
