"They drive around looking and hoping that someone will provoke them. Sooner or later, someone always obliges. [...] And on those days when no one offends, well, there is always random violence, isn't there?"

Apt description of MN now.

Except it's from The Kite Runner, and describes the Taliban.

Um. Isn't that £5k supposed to be spent on, you know, educating the child?

I know I'm in danger of reductio ad absurdam, but if you spend £5k on marketing to gain £5,500 in central funding, but now have an extra child to teach, that's not a win, is it?

I agree, so long as housing density isn't at the expense of community spaces.

We've had lots of new housing in N. Bristol (which is good), but in a quest for density (and it's friend, profit) the developers have forgotten things like retail space, green space, restaurants, cafes, room for clubs...
"With housing, more density means more community"

A mum at one of the many kids parties I went to today told me she'd read an article a few years ago and this really stood out to her. It's cos a parent not from Oxford asked me how we managed to have such a brilliant load of local shops (1/3)

I know a child, born in France, who came to the UK aged 5, speaking no English.

They are now 7 and are as fluent as any child you could meet. I wouldn't know English was their 2nd language if i hadn't been told.

The BBC would suggest this child "doesn't speak English fluently".
This is a really appalling editorial error on BBC Question Time

"Apparently one in three children don't speak English as a first language, why does this matter?"

Chair says "have English as a second language"

Caption changes the meaning entirely

I really love everyone that says "Duolingo is rubbish because it doesn't teach as well as a human".

Of course it doesn't. That's not what it's for. And it's £90 for 5 people per year! How much in person tuition are you expecting for that!

DL doesn't teach you to fluency - that's not its goal.

I don't know what time you record, @andrewhunterm.bsky.social , but The Naked Week has one job this week.

Show the necromanced potato that some parts of the BBC do still have a spine!
The important bit about this story - in reality the only important bit because nothing here is new - is that it delivers to an audience previously unaware of it a truth about the BBC's relationship to power: craven. www.theguardian.com/media/2025/n...

A little bit of analysis I've done shows that the salary sacrifice changes in the budget today fall most heavily in those between 20-60k, and much less on those above, both in absolute and % terms.

This is because NI falls to 2% above ~50k so the impact of the additional NI to pay is much smaller

When people say "but the flag is just a symbol of England / the UK" this is the kind of thing that makes me uneasy.

Genuinely scary to see the impacts of legal threats from abroad leading to censorship of our national broadcaster.
I wish I didn’t have to share this. But the BBC has decided to censor my first Reith Lecture.

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1

The rationale here is incredible. The industry says its lobbying has prevented a "tick box exercise".

That's where you rubber stamp something without having done anything meaningful or effected any change, right?

So, like classing new houses as 'green' without basic stuff like swift boxes, then?
Swifts have declined 70% since 1994.

They fly from Africa to breed here, only to find we've blocked their nest sites.

A £35 swift brick nest box was proposed for all new buildings.

The construction industry lobbied Labour to block it.

Biodiversity sustains life. Labour sustains economic power.

Just listened to the first episode of Coining It. Enjoyable, and I shall be coming back for more.

But, @lewisgoodall.com , what the heck is so weird about eating mushrooms raw from the fridge?

Did not expect my snacking habits to come under fire this evening 😅

I don't even live in London and I'm tempted to subscribe.

Partly because it looks like a well researched newspaper full of interesting stories.

But mostly to see if this article capitalises on the rich seam of pun-potential in a story about snails and shell companies.

Partly because it made me chuckle. Partly because it summed up the extremely pragmatic approach Zac takes.

He knows his objectives, but he also knows the fastest way achieve them isn't always to go straight at them.
Very interested to see where it goes.

Pleased to see Lewis's comment. Seeing nothing in mainstream newspapers, podcasts or TV news, I've been thinking 'wait, am I now part of the 'only-get-news-from-the-internet' crowd? Am I down the conspiracy rabbit hole?'

Hope this gets more coverage soon so I can prove I haven't gone full truther.

We got @michaelrosenyes.bsky.social's 'Sticky McStickstick' from the library this week.

What a fabulous homage to the NHS and the people that work there, all wrapped up in a story that can be loved by a three year old (particularly when Sticky hides in the washing machine).

Is this supposed to be Stewart Lee style, where the irony/dry humour builds from gentle to deafening until it becomes clear it's actually arguing *against* the position it sets out?

Either way, it's terrible. Imagine being William's family and having to read it.

Worrying undertone here that there's an "academic argument against DEI" on the basis of individual competence.

DEI means casting the net wider to reach people in demographics that wouldn't normally apply.

It reduces bias and increases quality by seeking excellent candidates from all walks of life.

I can't say whether these two things are linked.

But it's clear that Musk and Trump want (as Zuck once did) to "move fast and break things".

Today is a tragic warning that, when you're running a country rather than a corporation, the things that break are people's lives.
