Love being reminded to do this every year. It's a win/win all round

The rationale here is incredible. The industry says its lobbying has prevented a "tick box exercise".

That's where you rubber stamp something without having done anything meaningful or effected any change, right?

So, like classing new houses as 'green' without basic stuff like swift boxes, then?
Swifts have declined 70% since 1994.

They fly from Africa to breed here, only to find we've blocked their nest sites.

A £35 swift brick nest box was proposed for all new buildings.

The construction industry lobbied Labour to block it.

Biodiversity sustains life. Labour sustains economic power.

@franceinfo.fr : vous savez que ce type suggère que nos enfants devraient entretenir une relation de dépendance affective avec des iA ? Ce qui est un danger dénoncé par tout les spécialistes ?

Just listened to the first episode of Coining It. Enjoyable, and I shall be coming back for more.

But, @lewisgoodall.com , what the heck is so weird about eating mushrooms raw from the fridge?

Did not expect my snacking habits to come under fire this evening 😅
Couldn’t be more thrilled that my new documentary podcast series Coining It, is now top of the Apple series and show charts. Testament to the peerless teams at Free Turn and Global.

I don't even live in London and I'm tempted to subscribe.

Partly because it looks like a well researched newspaper full of interesting stories.

But mostly to see if this article capitalises on the rich seam of pun-potential in a story about snails and shell companies.

Best line: "I'm not Jo Swinsoning this!"

Partly because it made me chuckle. Partly because it summed up the extremely pragmatic approach Zac takes.

He knows his objectives, but he also knows the fastest way achieve them isn't always to go straight at them.
Very interested to see where it goes.

A classic bit of internet fun.

And the post this is a reply to and the subsequent discussion is a great thread that's well worth reading.

Pleased to see Lewis's comment. Seeing nothing in mainstream newspapers, podcasts or TV news, I've been thinking 'wait, am I now part of the 'only-get-news-from-the-internet' crowd? Am I down the conspiracy rabbit hole?'

Hope this gets more coverage soon so I can prove I haven't gone full truther.
There really hasn’t been as much coverage of Musk’s state capture as there should have been across the British media in last 24 hours. Not so on News Agents. Here’s today’s episode with 20 mins on the subject. podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/t...

We got @michaelrosenyes.bsky.social's 'Sticky McStickstick' from the library this week.

What a fabulous homage to the NHS and the people that work there, all wrapped up in a story that can be loved by a three year old (particularly when Sticky hides in the washing machine).

Is this supposed to be Stewart Lee style, where the irony/dry humour builds from gentle to deafening until it becomes clear it's actually arguing *against* the position it sets out?

Either way, it's terrible. Imagine being William's family and having to read it.

Worrying undertone here that there's an "academic argument against DEI" on the basis of individual competence.

DEI means casting the net wider to reach people in demographics that wouldn't normally apply.

It reduces bias and increases quality by seeking excellent candidates from all walks of life.
NEW: Weekend News Agents

Trump politicises a national tragedy within seconds. Why can he not help himself? Because it’s intrinsic to his politics of aggression and blame.

PLUS you asked me why the Greens don’t get more coverage. We try and answer.

Who new that Angela had so much say over the crucial trade infrastructure of the American continent!?

I'm blaming @jonsopel1.bsky.social, @maitlis.bsky.social and (because why not) @lewisgoodall.com for missing my target run pace today because I had to stop and laugh at this little blooper.

I can't say whether these two things are linked.

But it's clear that Musk and Trump want (as Zuck once did) to "move fast and break things".

Today is a tragic warning that, when you're running a country rather than a corporation, the things that break are people's lives.
Elon Musk, who has not been elected or officially appointed to any office, successfully pushed the FAA Administrator to resign 9 days ago.

The more I think about this, the more the quote in @lewisgoodall.com 's post feels like a move from disguised to overt discrimination. They don't feel the need to cover actions with excuses anymore - just saying what they mean.

Ew, that rationale.

If it were couched in terms of single sex spaces and unmitigatable risk for women then I'd disagree but see the grain of logic somewhere at the core.

But "they're liars and that's bad" is clearly just a poor disguise for prejudice and discrimination.

And this won't be the end

Worrying chat with Helle Thorning Schmidt by @jonsopel1.bsky.social for @newsagents.bsky.social USA.

As part of Meta Oversight Board: fact checking isn't my remit - we only deal with content moderation.

I'd love to ask what she thinks fact checking is, if not a core plank of content moderation.

We've seen some fairly underwhelming examples of Christian leadership and dignity in the last few months in the UK. But this does show that, at their best, faith leaders can deliver a message of compassion directly at those that need to hear it.

An example I hope (but doubt) others will follow.
Wow. Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde fearlessly calls out Trump and Vance to their faces. This is heroic.

Top draw toadying.

Exactly the approach that @johnfinnemore.bsky.social's Mr Birling would reward with an enormous tip.

I suspect that the toadying appreciation factor of Mr Birling and Mr Trump are in similar ballparks.

A remarkable listen.

Andrew Norfolk carefully, softly, devastatingly sets out all the context you need to understand the current discourse.

He is balanced, sensitive and doesn't shy away from identifying the failings and those that have been failed. A stark contrast to other voices.
‘It’s an utter distortion of the truth’

Andrew Norfolk, the journalist who broke the grooming gangs story 14 years ago, tells The News Agents he wants to 'set the record straight.'

I'm often impressed by Lewis's ability to recall the third placed candidate in a unimportant 1980s election.

But summoning, for an off the cuff reference to vests, not just the name "Onslow" but the name of the actor himself ("Geoff Hughes") is already a candidate for obscure trivia of the year.
