A lovely five minute read by Barry Gifford on David Lynch wherein you will find the clause, "but that's how it goes with psychogenic fugues."

yep. i can identify any number of structural issues but at the end of the day the basic problem is the republican party. this has been apparent for at least 20 years. it is also an incredibly unpopular observation to make among “serious” people.
Right.

If you want a good explanation of why the American system of government worked well enough for 200 years and then suddenly stopped, it's because Republicans in Congress suddenly started letting their partisan interests COMPLETELY override their institutional interests
a lot of problems wouldn't exist if we had a congress with even an ounce of self interest

Put another way:

Minnesotans are largely going "Yeah, this makes sense"

Non-Minnesotans are largely more upset because they think it's about one specific thing

Based on the posts I've seen, (most) people from outside MN seem to think it's just about the fraud accusations while (most) Minnesotans see it as the result of many factors (including a draining VP campaign, Melissa Hortman, the fact that he's already been in the office for 2 terms + more)

This isn’t “stepping down.”

This is a tactical retreat. It’s making room for others to step up. He has created an amazing legacy. Now he’s choosing to protect that and protect the people of Minnesota

all while working to keep the state’s most vulnerable populations safe from Trump’s policies.

There’s no failure there. I’m disappointed, but also thankful and relieved. When I saw him at the State Fair in Aug I almost didn’t recognize him - he has lost so much weight it was shocking.

Walz became a symbol for a lot of people on both ends of the political spectrum. But he’s a real person who in two years ran a speed round of a presidential campaign, lost that campaign, had 2 friends assassinated and another 2 injured in an failed assassination attempt

The people who wanted and built this system we have to live in have engineered it to make us all enmeshed and dependent.

Killing off pensions & replacing with 401ks. Etc.

Covid is a systemic, multi-organ disease … and "Long Covid" is what we risk every time we catch Covid or give it to someone else. Sometimes even when we have no symptoms.
Anyway… glad this work is happening.

Long COVID is best described as a cluster of overlapping symptoms rather than one single condition, according to a review of 64 studies from 20 countries covering 2.4 million people.

Fatigue was most common, often alongside muscle and joint pain, cognitive symptoms, or shortness of breath.

Money quote from @parismarx.com

This is at the heart of much of the rot in our infrastructures, marketplaces, and general well being.
"For three decades, the goal of tech development has not been to improve our lives or to serve the public good, but rather to maximize shareholder value and to increase the power of the companies that control it...We need to recognize that was a choice, and we can choose to take a different path."
For decades, Canadians eagerly rushed onto US tech platforms and services. But now the drawbacks of that dependence are on full display.

For @policyalternatives.ca, I explain the economic and political consequences of a US-dominated internet — and why digital sovereignty is imperative.

If you're wondering why RFK jr & cohorts would reduce or remove vaccination recommendations for children — "don't they know it will kill kids?" — the answer is they want to kill kids.
They may not say it aloud in these words, but they want the "weak" genes to fade out in the population.

I never played these games back when they were happening, but I’ve recently dipped a toe into the retro-handheld world and discovered I could play nearly any old game on a $60 handheld … I keep trying games and not sticking to one yet 😅 but it’s been fun so far
It's hard to pick a favorite 90s JRPG but I will gladly submit Chrono Trigger.

An off-the-cuff but uncontroversial top 5:

1. Chrono Trigger
2. Final Fantasy VI
3. Final Fantasy IV
4. Phantasy Star IV
5. Final Fantasy
What’s your favorite video game that’s at least 27 years old (so 1999 or earlier)? Let’s get a list of classics going.

I work in the industry and the big story at the end of last year was Microsoft laying off something to the effect of 9000 employees to fund copilot and how they lost an anti-trust lawsuit in Europe so they need to decouple Teams from their offering. they’re just spiking prices left and right of shit

Microsoft is functionally an Azure company that does other stuff at this point, but it’s still cultish malpractice for them to cannibalize Office365, something that represents a huge amount of steady do-nothing income, for copilot shit.
