Don’t forget lifetime maximums , even on employer plans. I would have been uninsurable by age 31 without ACA because of two hugely expensive medical emergencies. The only only reason I was able to have kids was ACA

The fights I had on the phone advocating for my employees' health coverage were outrageous. Parents who had kids with genetic syndromes. Older employees with cancer. Increasing the number of roadblocks to care was their strategy (that, and increasing the reserves they could invest and keep.)

I'll never forget when I was meeting with the BCBSIL VP of Customer Service in 1990 about our plan and he, looking bored, looked at his watch. Then asked me "Hey, would you like a trip to Bourbonnais from Meigs Field in our plane? You can see the Call Center." The waste. The lack of care.

The new GDT Frankenstein is fucking incredible, it gave me such catharsis, if you have weird father-figure issues (and all of politics in 2025 is weird father figure issues) please go see it, in theaters if possible

I'm a member of many hemp industry organizations that are all freaking out right now. One, the Midwest Hemp Council, has this helpful answer to the question everyone is asking: Why is the Senate going after hemp now? Basically a bullshit campaign from market competitors and prohibitionists.

So of course, it is the same 761 unit that was among those prevented from celebrating the liberation of Paris that they were so instrumental in bringing about...

That was part of the force that liberated Netherlands, and whose dead are among those honored by the Dutch at the cemetery in Margraten.

So the US recently forced the Dutch to remove a memorial to America's own Black soldiers that died liberating the Netherlands from the nazis? On brand.

Towards the end of WW2, the French were shocked when the US refused to let its own Black soldiers join the celebration the liberation of Paris.

I mean you can’t justify why the global south is poor and the capitalist imperial nations are rich without sounding racist.
Is it any coincidence that a large majority of anti-communists also happen to be racist?

Am insidious aspect of this plan is that it pits the healthy — who might spend more in premiums than healthcare services — against the sick.
Eugenics is a program.
Trump: "I want the money to go into an account for people where they buy their own health insurance. It's so good. The insurance will be better. It'll cost less. Everybody is gonna be happy. They're gonna feel like entrepreneurs. They're actually able to go out & negotiate their own insurance"

This is one of those times when the most vicious follow-up would be a factual: "How do you think that would work, sir? What do you mean, 'Buy their own health insurance?' From whom? Why would it cost less?"

A lot of people aren't old enough to remember US Healthcare before the ACA.
It was a dark time.
-Pre-existing insurance-no coverage
-kids off parents plans at 18
-even workplace insurance could exclude pre existing conditions
-no insurance funded breast pumps

Do I trust them? No. That’s why I voted no. But they are in a terrible position, and we can use the next few weeks to turn the pressure up even further.

Movies don't often stick with me emotionally until the next day but Frankenstein (2025) is still on my mind. Something about the tender turn it took and the way it loves the "monster" and makes him beautiful — even beatific.
Definitely due for a rewatch soon.

(Basil plant is now bare; farmers market likely won't have recent heritage tomatoes until next year; tho I did set one tomato aside for another BLT later 🥪)

American politics makes a lot more sense when you realize that the GOP is afraid of pissing off the GOP base, and the Dems are afraid of pissing off the GOP base, but neither party is afraid of pissing off the Dem base.

Helpful context
3. Republicans were playing good cop, bad cop, crazy cop.

Good cop: Senate Republicans
Bad cop: House Republicans (Johnson)
Crazy cop: Russ Vought + Trump

Vought's plan was always to use impoundment/rescissions/starving people + firing feds to force Dems to surrender on the power of the purse.
