it boggles my mind that so many leftists, who broadly subscribe to an ideology that correctly points out the bad incentives of capitalism, have decided that the obvious incentive for constraining supply when you own some of the supply simply does not apply to homeowners

1. Corporations own most of the homes. FALSE. They do not
2. Corporations want to keep homes vacant. FALSE. They like renting them out to *make money* instead of losing it.
3. Homeowners are the heroes fighting against this. FALSE. They drive up prices making this possible

Not a huge Derek Thompson fan but he's straightforwardly correct here. Financial institutions own a tiny percentage of US homes and generally rent them out rather than keeping them vacant. Preventing BlackRock from buying housing wouldn't do much to help affordability.

I cannot get over how no one in mainstream politics even disputes factual claims like this. Everyone admits that Israel is starving children and murdering desperate civilians. The only ‘debate’ is about what to call it and whether the motives of people protesting it are pure enough.
