They were poisoned by a generation of "parenting experts" that basically convinced people that any feeling that isnt "positive" needs to be drugged/talked/or activitied out of existence.

Political gravity would normally have made GHW Bush a loser in 1988 and instead he won the electoral college by a mile. Then his popularity soared after Desert Storm. So Democrats were very much on the defensive in '92 but still ran on UHC and raising taxes on the rich. Hardly right of center.
