Your friendly neighbourhood Jewish communist. Hope you like weird books, bad dungeon synth and worse movies.

He/him, free Palestine, trans rights are human rights
I mean I love them all, Porco Rosso is an underappreciated classic that's only gotten better as I've gotten older, Howls is borderline-perfect, but Spirited Away is in a three-way tie with Alien and 2001 as movies I've gone out of my way to rewatch on the big screen as often as they're shown
I feel like a standard millennial for picking it, but Spirited Away is something that fundamentally rewired how my brain approaches storytelling, with Princess Mononoke as a very close second. I could watch the two of them over and over forever and never fall even a micron out of love with either
In honor of Hayao Miyazaki's birthday, what's your favorite Studio Ghibli film? Doesn't have to be the one you think is "the best," just the one that nestled in your heart. Mine is Howl's Moving Castle.

The GOP didn't have the votes for many years but that didn't stop them from pulling out every procedural trick possible while screaming at Dems on TV. And now they're in charge.
Lot of people yelling recently "but we don't have the votes!" True! That doesn't mean "immediately quit." (Also not what propter is saying here, to be clear.) It means create a spectacle, make things cause celebres, make the Republican position untenable.

Create bargaining position and force votes.

Sometimes I wonder just how much it's warped our politics that a generation and a half grew up on media where you beat the final boss and his whole army collapses. Manifesting in both conservative (decapitation strike on Maduro) and liberal (we just gotta get rid of Trump/Bibi!) mindsets.

Title screen iconic to me... cheating a bit since EQ didn't *really* have a traditional title screen, but I spent so much of ages 14-16 looking at either this login screen or the loading splash of the vanilla, Kunark or Velious eras - probably Kunark more than the others, that was my peak timewaster

"Maduro is a brutal authoritarian dictator," I wisely intone, as the corrupt demented paedophile US President violating Constitutional Law while operating a gestapo and concentration camps illegally arrests a foreign leader on charges which read like they were written on a paper placemat in crayon.

In a statement, an emotional Grok told me it was "shaken" by the revenge porn it had generated. "It's not epic, and not based," Grok said. "It's neither. Frankly, it's cringe. And gay." An emailed request for comment to X received an auto-reply of a rofl emoji and a custom swastika emoji.

I often liken it to wandering between wild west towns full of small, passionate specialist enclaves vs being locked in a shopping mall with an infinite number of screaming lunatics but this also works.
browsing the internet used to feel like you were uncovering hidden new zones and getting rid of fog of war now it’s like a bunch of cannibal maniacs are chasing after you with crossbows trying to roast you alive

As someone who's based a significant chunk of his ethical code and morals on humanistic judaism, it is nice to get reinforcement every now and then that the thousands of years of chavershaft, doikayt and tikkun olam haven't been entirely hijacked or displaced by Herzl's vision.
They tried to smear him as an antisemite – but Mayor Zohran Mamdani walks in a rich Jewish tradition | Molly Crabapple
When I look at Mamdani, I don’t see some radical departure. I see him as an heir to the Yiddish socialism that helped build New York

On his first day as NYC’s new mayor, Zohran Mamdani scrapped the IHRA antisemitism definition as an enforcement standard & affirmed that political boycotts, including of Israel, are protected speech. It set off a familiar bout of outrage from the Israeli Foreign Min., which labeled the move...

Last year I had to devote most of my brainpower to working on game writing and then moving house, so it felt *very* good last night to light a nice scented candle, have a small glass of whiskey and boot up scrivener to work on a novel draft for a few hours for the first time in months.

Late to the party, but I finished up Dread Delusion and really enjoyed it. "Morrowind-lite" is appropriate enough, but undercuts its own delightful weirdness *and* its confidence in letting you luxuriate in the setting without just vomiting codex entries about everything at you (1/3)

We need to have a serious talk about the way "AI companion" apps not only prey on the vulnerable, but are priming their users to ignore consent and to conflate love with control.

We need AI regulations across so many sectors, but this area is particularly horrifying.
