Physical manifestation of an economy focused around futures speculation.
Just so I'm clear on this, computer memory has tripled in price because a bunch of it that hasn't been produced yet has been ordered to populate GPUs that aren't installed in data centers that aren't built yet in order to service a demand that doesn't exist to make profits that don't happen.

I'm not even going to pretend I'm not anti-AI. But you can really see the massive flaws when people attempt to get AI to produce sequential art. AI can't replace a comic creator or movie director. I don't think it ever will.

First, this ad was hot garbage and I'm glad it's gone. But second, why are we so capable of seeing this slop for what it is in commercial advertisements yet so relatively passive in the face of AI intrusion into education? Is it just that it's less visible? A conundrum.
It's truly wild to me that this just keeps happening. Coca-Cola runs an AI ad and people overwhelmingly react with disgust. They do it again, and people are disgusted again. Now McDonald's makes an AI ad that's so bad that so many people are furious about it they pull it down.

People hate AI slop!

Sorry if that’s a deal breaker

IT on campus is definitely worried about AI's role in increased hacks and phishing attempts.

Not sure repeated "be careful as an individual" messages are gonna help much (kinda like climate change - its a systems problem, not an individual one (unless you're a billionaire, in both cases))...

And then the community drags him for a full 24 hours and he goes into hiding again.

ANYWAY, AI is a atrocious. But you know what's great? Asking black comic creators to come speak to kids at your local middle school. (I'm namedropping @shawnrpryor.bsky.social and @shanfiction.bsky.social as two candidates for this.)

my comics advice is: show feet

it sounds like dumb online meme nonsense but it's not; every 2-3 pages make sure you draw your character so their feet show, it grounds them in the environment and forces you to vary your panel composition.

Since 2024 I've seen jobs on sites like Indeed listed as "librarian" but are just $20 p/hr AI training jobs. They all require a BA (which is both unnecessary for data training and also not an MLIS which is actually required for a librarian job).
I'm starting to see jobs out there for 'humanties experts' to train AI systems. I know we all need work, but don't do it.

Anyone who says “be normal” betrays that they have an implicit value system of who is considered normal and who is not, and when you have that, you will always value some people and traits over another. They will always replicate hierarchies of power in the long run.
California Governor Gavin Newsom said on Thursday that the Democratic Party needed to be “more culturally normal” and “less judgmental.”

Artist alleys at comic cons bum me out sometimes because I’ll see artists who’ve inspired me my whole life grinding away hour by hour when they should all be comfortable as hell and doing whatever they want, making whatever they want. I want that for everybody!

A stressful part of trying to be out and about and putting things on my calendar is when I can’t tell if something happening is an event, a place, just a store, a pop-up, a fair, a vibe, or what. The vague details become an art itself 😆

A couple weeks ago we got a lovely note from someone on the other side of the country thanking us profusely for ILLing a book to them. Curious, we looked up the book they borrowed.

It would have cost $1,200 for them to purchase it.

ILL is one of the things I love most about libraries.
Requested a book through ILL over break. It arrived today. Libraries man.
