I remember taking the mandatory engineering ethics class in college where we learned about how your job comes with serious responsibility; how software that handles medicine delivery can kill people if there are bugs or how the Hyatt Regency walkway collapse happened.

No one seemed to care.
Can't wait for the loosened up, non-perfect, but quickly shipped AI-enhanced updates to hit my banking and insurance services next year.

Im sure there will be no issues there at all.

I am a giant nerd who does nerd things, and a staple of the Starfield modding community that I am in needs some help with covering the surgery for her bunny who is fighting cancer.

I know what It is to lose a pet to cancer. Help keep it from happening to someone else.

It's really sweet that my nephew went from "Bernie makes me very nervous" to "is Bernie coming tomorrow morning too?" 🥺

This thread perfectly explains why AI has little value for qualitative research.

Yes, large language models can find patterns in qualitative data. But, they're trained on what we already know. So, they won't find anything surprising. And, surprise is qualitative research's primary value-add.
Absolutely right.

AI might be able to summarize (poorly) what we currently know, but a major goal of historical research is to find the hidden surprises out there.

Let me illustrate …
Not a historian but like to research. The AI might summarize what I'm looking for, but it doesn't find what I'm *not* looking for. The book on the shelf next to the one I wanted. The insight in chapter 6 based on the quote I needed from chapter 4.

If anyone was curious, the pharmacy insured the shipment and very kindly remade her meds for free this morning before they closed at 12:30 for the long weekend. 😭 (Lake Elmo compounding pharmacy if you're local)
In other news, the mail carrier "delivered" what was supposed to be my cat's compounded meds but all we got was a ripped bubble mailer that only had the Rx info sheets and my receipt inside. Hope whoever took it enjoys tuna and marshmallow flavored Lexapro chews.

Do you know what is definitely not helpful when wrapping gifts? Puppies. Puppies are not helpful. Sorry the edge of the paper is chewed, I already had to rewrap it once because she grabbed a corner and ran/ripped it up. 😂

I tried to close my eyes for a few and Bernie (puppy) sat right on my face.

For non-academics: this means the student is likely done at OU because the TA gig is attached to tuition waivers for graduate school. Sunk time at OU will be lost and the options are to quit or start over somewhere else.

Idk if it's burnout or *gestures broadly* or a combo, but this holiday season feels extra sad. Also my favorite neighborhood coffee place has been sold and I'm getting my last bag of coffee from them and my last specialty latte.
