What can sociology offer urban public health?

Just discovered this blindly good article! Perfect segue between the objectives of 'town' planning and population health and well-being.

And a translation in non- technical language please Paul...

"The vehicle strikes a pedestrian much higher in torso region so tends to push the pedestrian forward and down. The result is you have a lot more severe injuries, and often than not a lot more head injuries. "
Safety experts say the additional height of these vehicles may also impede visibility.

"The front ends of some of the best selling cars in America (full-size pickups) are as high as 55 inches, producing huge forward blind zones that are especially dangerous to children and wheelchair users," Right of Way: Race, Class, and the Silent Epidemic of Pedestrian Deaths in America.

The single most shocking piece of research I've found in years of deep-diving into car bloat is this:

Raising a vehicle's front hood by just 4" increases the chance of pedestrian death by ~22%.

Certainly news to me. Thank you OP.

Why do we still pretend the COPs matter?

They’ve become a theatre where every promise is broken before the ink dries.

You can't create collective well-being by incentivizing its opposite.
Maybe Keir should demand the heads of major US news networks any time they imply Britain is on the brink of civil war or that we live under sharia law. Or does it not work both ways?

Flying had just become the default, convenient, quick, cheap.
But when you stop to think about it, travelling so fast and so far doesn’t always feel right.

Such is the power of @zackpolanski.bsky.social that he's prompted the Daily Express(!) to write a totally respectful article about the meaning of the white poppy

Meaning of a white poppy and white poppy symbolism as Zack Polanski wears one
Green party leader Zack Polanski was seen sporting a white poppy alongside a red one for Remembrance Sunday today - but what does a white poppy mean?

Micro-grid shift too.
All the domestic battery installations also add to this energy time-shift too.
Domestic 'solar with batteries' builds grid resilience and a distributed network.
Full disclosure: I had 11kWh of battery storage installed last week. Horray!
Today’s fun tax tip…

(It’s a similarly daft situation that railways pay tax on fuel/energy but airlines don’t pay any tax on their aviation fuel, a huge hidden subsidy)

I love how the GoP and big business have painted themselves into a corner over this. I hate it's hurting people, but dear lord the capitalist hell is about ready to collapse on itself just because they put an egomaniac in the white house

BUY SOMETHING!

Is it truly social media anymore? Or is it more like selling media? It invades everything.

It's obvious to wealthiest and most powerful people on the planet don't care for nature, climate, the earth or the universe.

So I painted the invasive nature of ads in nature.

One Australian gas project — just one — will cause 0.00039°C of extra global heating.

That’s 516,000 more people exposed to deadly heat.

Sickening hypocrisy from @micheal-martin.bsky.social - political leader of one of the most carbon intensive countries in the world.

Phew! It's about geothermal energy not coalmining.

Trains to and from Berlin are my preference even from Bristol (about 1.5 hours West of London).
I always have a relaxing trip, lovely scenery.
Took the 'Goodnight Train' one time - fun. I recommend.
