While I think this is over-egging the issue, there is an issue within the Green Party that it needs to full embrace intensification of existing development. Being against greenbelt development (except near train stations) makes financial sense. Opposing it in already developed areas doesn't.
"The Green Party has a habit of supporting things in principle and opposing them in practice. It wants environmentally friendly transport, then opposes HS2. It wants clean energy, but opposes wind farms locally. It supports affordable housing, but opposes almost every building project it sees."

The lengths people in a subreddit that's supposedly about middle class finance will go to try and define the crippling financial effects of car dependency is truly astounding. You'd think that the idea of saving money by living somewhere that doesn't need a car would make sense to them. But no.

Great piece from @dsquareddigest.bsky.social, which touches on one of the big theories for why English-speaking countries do especially badly at housebuilding:

Adversarial and litigious common law systems (Anglo) vs judge-led civil law systems elsewhere.

Great proposal this. Continues to be incredibly funny and incredibly stupid that for years we've *banned* bus and rail operators "colluding" to make their timetables integrate with each other.
Fantastic to see my Mini Switzerland idea covered by the BBC.

It captures so many people’s imaginations because it’s both obvious, simple and yet - from where we are today - unspeakably radical.

Please share!

Signs your city doesn’t have enough bike parking.

Also, the other thing a lot of places don’t understand is it’s not about volume with bike parking; it’s about distribution.

In an ideal world, there would be at least one rack outside every store/service. When it comes to bikes it’s about security.

This is the importance of better data when enabling riding bikes to work. If I took the BBC’s (or any other standard) weather forecast at face value, I’d assume I was going to get rained on. For many, that would be enough to break their willpower and drive instead.

Even better: The Continuous Sidewalk.

Instead of forcing people to step down into the street, we make the cars step up into the pedestrian space. It prioritizes the person walking or rolling, keeps the path level for accessibility, and physically forces drivers to slow down.

Add 6,000 apartments, prices drop.

This eases pressure on voucher programs, helps low-income renters, makes the city more accessible.

Want sustained affordability? Keep building.

15 years ago today, I was stood in a very cold (-15C) Red Square. I remember thinking how unbelievable it would have seemed if my parents had been told, when I was born, that I’d be standing there one day.

Sadly, it’s once again unthinkable for many. A pity, as it’s an amazing place to visit.
