#sprats
Out in a wee boat trying to collect whale DNA- no success but great to see the Kittiwakes and Herring gulls getting photobombed by a Humpback and a Minke! 😄 #Ullapool #Highlandbirds #CetaceansUK

John West "Skippers" available in supermarkets (tinned sprats, not pickled unfortunately but might do as a substitute). About £1.50/tin

#Advent 12 is a #FestiveFishyFriday. When the chips are down, every gig sells out as the Sprats always manage to fillet with their close knit harmony singing. 🐟🛶

The Singing Sprats are joined this #FestiveFishyFriday by El-Fish Espadin Pescado.
“What style do they sing?” asks CT Bear.
“Acapaella” says Snowman.

I'm cooking Nigella's recipe for Jansson's Temptation on Sunday. I bought the Swedish Ansjovis online, but now they're here, I think they're just normal salted anchovies, not the proper Grebbestad sprats. So I guess I'm going on a pickled herring hunt this weekend! 🔎

(I am more of a Baltic sprats and kippered herring guy myself but all fish can be good)

#Advent day five is the first #FestiveFishyFriday of the season. The codfearing Cornish Sprats sea shanty style singing warms the cockles of even CT Bear’s heart. 🎄

This but with sprats. If you haven't slammed a can of Riga Gold you genuinely haven't lived.

Day 4 of #Advent and the Singing Snowman invokes a secular Queen classic after CTB requests the afternoon off to rest his ears.
🎵“Easy come, easy go, will you let me go?”
Bismillah!
No, we will not let you go
(let him go)”🎵

Pebble: a picture of me looking elegant and cute! Cannot be that hard, eh? 😆

Pebble and a tin of sprats 🐾🐟😆

Reggie pal! You know the story! Pebble was negotiating ‘opening terms’ he knows I find sprats depressing but he assured me there is no need to worry as he is not intending to share 😆

I tempted her outside with some dried sprats and got her back in again the same way after she'd had a wee.
This morning she couldn't stand, and Ian and I decided we needed to call out the vet to have her PTS. She dragged herself out for a poo, then collapsed next to my car...

Actually kind of interesting - I have made this before with anchovies but I had heard it's properly done with sprats; making it with them it's way less salty, a lot more delicate.

One of Sweden’s most delicious exports, Jansson’s temptation, otherwise known as Janssons frestelse, is a creamy potato casserole with melty onions and umami-packed tinned sprats.
Jansson’s Temptation (Creamy Potato Casserole) Recipe
One of Sweden’s most delicious exports, Jansson’s temptation, otherwise known as Janssons frestelse, is a creamy potato casserole with melty onions and umami-packed tinned sprats (see Tip) There are a few theories as to the origin of this Swedish classic, which is often served with schnapps as part of the Julbord, or Christmas table One suggests that it was named after a 1928 silent film, while an older story says that it was named after the opera singer Per Adolf Janzon — but that one’s “not so likely” according to Jens Linder, a Swedish food writer

i have enjoyed mackerel lately and small sprats, but i keep coming back to longfin tuna in olive oil with a cup of rice. its absurd how quality can vary from canneries for simply fish giving you widely different opinions on fish

i wanna try trout and herring..

We used to buy sprats/sardines or similar for the local heron at the millponds. He was very skilled at catching the little fish in mid-air when we gently tossed them at him.

Fishmonger in the supermarket reckoned it was the best-fed heron in NI.

Sardines are okay and so is mackerel, but the top tier canned fish are Riga sprats, lightly smoked and canned in sunflower oil. They are good on bread, but also with Japanese rice, the carb of choice I eat practically everyday.

Also the herring fillers that Trader Joe's used to sell. I miss them.
