Lack of interest is a big part of the problem. And that's intentional, too. The sixties scared the ruling class. They didn't like an educated populace. Which is why Republicans have worked to make education less effective. They don't want people to be interested or informed.

My parents are both retired now, so they finally have time and freedom to travel as much as they want. For years my mom dealt with some pretty thankless customer service working for Delta, so they can fly standby all over the world for the tax a ticket would have cost.

Child psych specialist here: this is why I’m still working in my late sixties, access is terrible. Good for you for getting your kid help early, data shows early intervention is associated with better outcomes. Hope it goes well.
