Nightfall is that brazen end, a still burning cigarette-stub before the soft-shoe-shuffle of the tremendous dark, when evening finally drains its inky bleed of colours and a palette of fathomless browns and moon-washed greys replaces the stupid, so flat, simple illumination of day. Then, an impatient dart from star to star through the swinging trapeze of adapting night-sight; a Little Bear pinned down by its icy tail; Capella: winter’s warming honey-drop; spring’s immutable sky-spark Arcturus; and later Vega’s slightly ajar mortuary door: its background hum of blueish tinged-light, a spilling out of the reek and the tang from a just round the corner cadaver’s slab.

the inner mirror january frost has silverglazed the lake into a looking- glass reflecting back the night and that itself, the water’s glimmer is mirrored back on winter moon’s tin-translucent skin and so it is that all things melt into a one gleam so bright your eyes hurt from the sheer bright fearlessness of it bouncing off each other back and forth like a never-finished hymn gasp-sung by celestial choirs ever swelling like the lungs of storm-wassailing sparrows that grow into a holy throat with how the wind prays through them and for a second there all of a sudden among all that indomitable blackened cold in your gaze you hold every single star you’ve dreamed winking back at you

Dylan returned to the staging area of the Olympia System to find his flight #spooked.

The Enemy had appeared, patrolled around the system, but hadn’t attacked. Something was about to happen and Dylan didn’t know what. An attack to come? A feint to gather forces there? He needed to know.

In the bare poplar tree outside my window, Eastern Phoebes have been visiting. Ever-so-slowly, light is returning. I took this photo the other day while watching one gently surf the wind on a limb. Its dusky overcoat and creamy underside make this small puff of feathers look like a smoky cloud droplet against the winter green bokeh. From afar, the Phoebe's eyes look beady, but close up they have beautiful copper irises—so bright and full of cleverness. Here in the Blue Ridge Mountains, they symbolize the renewal of good luck and fortune for the year. Their famous fee-bee song is a harbinger of spring.

Midnight Walk Bundled in hats and scarves we step into the blanketed night to take the dog on his evening rounds. Nightfall brings more snowfall, draping the humdrum scene in glistening linen, hushing our excited voices as the dog chases snowballs. The snowbound path lies virgin-pure. We delight in our own footprints, intertwined with the crazed tracks of an ice-addled mutt. For a brief moment we are children again in a world that belongs to us alone, but the cold soon reminds our knees of their age, and the only sign of our nocturnal joy is the trail of muddled footsteps left behind in the snow.

After almost 5 years I finally finished a painting that began as an ambitious light & reflection project in an adult education class. It's a 1980's Henry Moore toaster, my toaster. Each winter I return to this piece and now its complete there is a sense of relief and fatigue.

A bowl of salt waits on the sill, catching the last blue breath of day. She stirs it with her fingertip, circles widening like moons learning how to rise. Lemon peel warms the room; honey, burnt sugar, baklava breathing sweetness. A red thread rests on her wrist, warm now, bright as a promise she keeps touching. Rue seeds smoulder; the smoke loosens, unhurried, soft prayers rehearsed for a son. Beneath the pillow, cold iron lies, snipping the dark like paper dolls from air. And when the first star trembles awake in the sky, she closes her eyes, breathes in the blue-sweet air, and lets the night pour itself over her like honey from a patient spoon, cupping her in its slow, blue hush.

Tabor Ice Ice yields to the Ineffable, inaudible Knell. Dozed or Rousted, we Pitch-perish into Gelid waters where Psyche and Wholly Other Collide. With Blue-tipped toe-finger, Flopped-body core and limb, Ink-pool gaze fix: our Breaths lapse, our Hearts stop before we Revive or Surrender. We carve Crux-holes in Frozen sheets: Inoculation fonts that Steel us with Epiphany, Steep us in Theophany. We Thrice-dip, Triple-bless. As Foetal huddles, we Gasp and choke, Quiver and quicken at that Umbilical Sundering from Eden. Death-clamps Dock us from Mother-blood, Gush us out into Lifeblood.
