“Who Said I Was a Wizard?”

Character art I made for a D&D campaign I’ve joined after another one ended. Roan is very old school wizard coded (with a touch of druid). Portraying a witty grandfather and former farmer thrust into a dungeon crawl amid a party of otherwise young adults is good fun.

A measure How do you measure sacrifice? What ratio makes it a worthwhile choice? Buried friends, stolen years A belief in a cause A belief in people An idea of goodness If not perfect in practice. At what point was it worth it? What does it mean when the reason No longer cares about the actions? Thank me for my service? Why? What does it mean in this place?

Logs A haibun by Dawn Mclachlan From a high window I watch upturned clouds fill the valley and blur the silhouetted forest. The logs remain tumbled together in a giant bag in the yard. In a fit of hubris I dig out a pair of thick gloves and decide to move and stack them on my own. By the time I manage to haul everything in and fill the shed, the mist has arrived and stealthily smothers the town. It clings to me like sweat as I tug the day's splinters from my blistered hands. As streetlights signal the arrival of evening I shake beads of water from my hair like a dog and think of the supper I have yet to plan. Shrouded in the mist Fearful of Winter's sharp teeth I stack logs alone

Working Love I fell for you in work amid the photocopier’s paparazzi-flashing, had no control over seating so, between floors giddy elevator conversations snatched. Once, outside, during a fire evacuation test I stood by you, aware my ruddy-face was so obviously smouldering. Hold the note you gave me for supposed help on an urgently demanded spinning-hamster-wheel type task, just a rather economical: ‘Thank you v v much’ but I imagined that first word unexpectedly promoted and H.R. formally introducing its shyest new replacement: Love. Since that day to my certain knowledge you’ve never used ‘v v’ again… though I make sure those twanging Cupid arrowheads are near daily kept still in play.

A poem entitled Closed Door I know the night it opened and how life looked up like a Woodpigeon clattering off its nest or a thundercloud's electrons coming home but not one instant so more like a tide racing across the sand with small waders in constant surprise & rush reeling, wheeling around to find peace in the marram grass, comfort in huddle & safety. Yes, that was the night— not much sleep, but deep. But which was the night it shut? I'll never know and you won't say but for sure it was years before the day you crossed a line and I walked out through a closed door, at least a door I thought was closed then I pushed it shut from outside and it was.

loneliness spreading through the fog— sandpiper's cry ocean spray at dawn seagulls sailing through ~ KL scent of chai mixed with vanilla, spring breeze ~ DW morning on the west porch watching pale moonset ~ KL wrapped around the blackbird, old sky ~ DW noon smells of diesel thunder far away ~ KL dead flowers next to fake flowers: spring night ~ DW drinking stale coffee a freight train passes by ~KL

From my cell’s cardinal points, Four spiders work away at their webs Night after night, Day upon day. Cunning crafters, they crave no respite. Their bodies - oiled, grimed, and Engorged - Warp silk line upon silk line, Weft sticky spiral after sticky spiral, in Unyielding rounds of Self-same prayer threaded Night after night, Day upon day, in an Unslacking orgy of monotony. Their four webs merge into a Nexus of gossamer monstrosity. Their four turgid bottoms romp in the Dank stench of dust-choked obscurity. Dew-beaded filaments Titillate my brow, Gum up my lashes: Ashen-white strands - So light, so soft – like Fine spittle spun from Marrow. With bestial fervour, Four fat spiders Cavort, carouse as One.
