Provocative pursuits
juggling fire,
naked on national television,
interrupting sacred silence,
shouting at the top of your voice,
running with bulls
through a sleeping town,
calling out the minister for fools.

Bad behaviour justified
“It was the alcohol I drank,” is said,
with a stench of stale breath.
A slip of the tongue,
“I won’t do it again,” is muttered.
Mournful eyes plead for trust.
But with each new dawn,
the same pattern returns,
washed over again.

Villanelles are one of my favourite poetic forms, but I very rarely write them as they are hard to do well. I think this one went okay.
