The First Frost This morning I noticed a flick of frost in your beard. A few pale grains that looked like they’d landed there by accident. You were making a coffee, aromatic steam lifting the kitchen as we slowly shuffled into the day. And there it was, a small announcement that things shift even when we’re not looking. I liked seeing it. Not as a warning, just a marker to show we’re moving through time side by side. Unbothered by the weather as the seasons change us.

The Feral Dark Be thoughtful of what others are going through. You do not know the shape of their darkness. Bear, wolfhound, winged hare. The velvet crown-chandelier of a moose. Maybe their sadness has grown antlers, maybe their silence sprouts fangs. They might be another night, another language, a dream you are straining to dream. Listen closely, extend a hand. Sometimes the softness of a fingertip ignites a star.

Ah! Humbug! I am a hairy lentil man but at this time of year, And as all men of good will should, I keep my loved ones near. But into every festive treat, they slip a swine or steer, or something from a chuck or a cow Please tell me how? You’d have thought they’d be avoiding it by now. I know it’s just a choice I made, I’ve no right to be mad. But reading through ingredients it really makes me sad. How can you not cook carrot sticks without killing somethings dad, or potatoes without killing a duck? I mean what the fuck? This dinner really has me out of luck. You rootle through the cupboards for something I can eat. Cos all your bloody puddings are made with cloven feet. You roll your eyes behind my back like my brains incomplete. All I want is something not cooked in goose fat. You chuffing twat. Is there really so much villainy in that? My blood sugar is really low, I’m sorry that I snapped. It’s just that you’re so ignorant you make me feel quite trapped. I don’t expect you to drop meat and all that other crap, I just don’t think that I should be left out That’s why I shout. It would be less work for you to leave it out. I sit on the front door step, my dinner in my hand. A slightly hairy humbug, with a little bit of sand. My good will is completely gone, I hope you understand. All I wanted was comfort and joy, comfort and joy. All I wanted was comfort and joy.Ah! Humbug! Twelve Days of a Black Country Christmas   When it was Christmas, My bab he gave to me:   Twelve Firkin mince pies (Firkins is a famous local bakery) Eleven Wolves lads playing (football - very badly) Ten pints of Banks’s (the local brewery) Nine packs of scratchings (deep-fried pig skin and fat) Eight herbal tablets (the most popular confectionery to come out of the Teddy Grays sweet factory in Dudley) Seven bosting faggots (bosting means good, faggots are a sort of gristle filled, peppery meatball made from the bits no one wants name) Six plates of grey peas (think think, tasteless, hard, grey mushy peas) Five cheese cobs (bostin - especially with thick raw onion) Four orange chips (chunky chips fried in a weird thin orange batter) Three Staffies (Staffordshire Bull Terrier dogs) Two tumblers (a type of racing pigeon) And “It’s Christmas” belted out by Noddy (Merry Christmas Everybody by Slade - a good, honest Black Country band)
