A poem by Debbie Ross entitled To Infinity and Beyond The parallel tracks rattle locals and day-tippers through almost wildness to the west, that magic isle from where so many left, carried further west by sea and train seeded in another land. Age eats youth, Wrath drubs sense, Revolution feasts on its own Offspring. Embittered at the world, He fears madness: Firsthand panic, Unmediated terror Seeping into painting, into Works hermetic and intimate. Alchemical lead of the Brooding recluse Born under Saturn: Transmuting craft into Sombre providence, Recasting vision as Melancholic calling. Black-box opacity of Soul-kindle Discipline. Wicker Man Sequel I: Winter of Discontent, 1973-74 Once the ice cubes are Sucked dry, Our frosted breaths spell D—th: Mouthed but never, ever Sounded. They come in Threes: Tokens hinting at some Calamity afoot. Firstly: Our genial hybrid – part folk horror, part Noir, part musical, part documentary – Mangled into some double-feature, B-movie schlock fest. Secondly: The Burren Head Wicker Man ruin Prefiguring the fate of the Director’s Cut negative, buried under Pylons that prop up the M4. You just don’t do that to a negative! Sergeant Howie would no doubt Liken such an act to desecrating the Host. Thirdly: Prophetic atrocity nested in an Islander’s dream. Christ mocking us with His earthly span: that execrable “Not the Bees!” Hollywood Remake, Thirty-three years hence. Baulking at child sacrifice, We abandon a plot to kidnap the future Leading man, just nine years old in 1973. We get what we want: a Bountiful harvest. But demand for our apples Plummets in the aftermath of the October War. We enlist the W.I.* Expertise of matriarchs from Christian neighbours in the Archipelago, who teach us the Lost alchemical arts of Chutney and bottled preserves. Their dignified, often formidable Bearing stuns us. We start to wonder at Our role as bit-part players in those Tawdry, communal Sex romps splayed nightly before The Green Man - enacted to Delight Our Laird and His Inner Circle, Three Blonde Weird Sisters. Yes, Lord Summerisle – that Hefner-cum-Dracula Cult commandant, with his Walt Whitman snail fetish; His drag-queen shtick Designed to Upstage the May Queen. He languishes Now that the Weird Sisters - The Landlord’s Daughter The Headmistress The Librarian – have Fled the island. ©Jan Peters/Solivagant Wisdom, 2025 With Emotional incontinence Born of intemperance, He weeps at photographs Blazoning his Prize crop; Searches the inscrutable Gaze that rivets him to the Life-size portrait of his Victorian grandsire; Wakes in cold sweats at Nightmares in which his Venerable forebear’s Eye sockets bore into the Back of his head. Elsewhere on the island, with the Three-Day Week in full swing, Televisions and lava lamps expire as Dusk falls. Lindsay Kemp - Alder MacGregor, if you will - Teaches bored kids the art of Shadow-play mime by Guttering candlelight. The Green Man is plagued by the Ghost of Willow MacGregor’s Butt-naked Body double pounding on the Wall adjoining the Guest Room – a scene Played out in Infinite loops. At our wits’ end, We coax a grim-jawed Exorcist out of his Glasgow Presbytery. He grudgingly agrees to Rid us of this Maddening nuisance. A poem by Debbie Ross entitled Symbols Single stanza text as follows I got a tiara for my 60th birthday, a present from a friend, to remind me of my ascension to wise womanhood, or women of a certain age, who no longer care what others think; who don't take themselves too seriously, but seriously enough to wear a crown and think we own it.

A piece I wrote to an Ekphrastic prompt, which The Ekphrastic Review published in their challenge selection. It was written just after the terrorist attack in Israel and when what was obvious even then as a disproportionate response was beginning.

A personal thread about using rhyme in poetry🧵
Despite once being a mainstay of form & despite its persistence in popular song, rhyme has lost favour with many poets. Some eschew it on principle. Others, even those who use it, are nervous of it. To many it seems old-fashioned, trivial, nursery stuff

The original prompt was 5 line vignette, a Proper Noun and onomatopoeia.

Convenience puts pots and glasses on the top shelf so he has to stretch to reach them. They wobble precariously. Buys the heaviest vacuum cleaner so his arms ache when he lugs it upstairs. It has the shortest lead, or the battery is flat. He packs as many delicate ornaments as he can on the smooth surfaces so he has to remove them when he polishes. His shower curtain is held in place By half full shower gel containers that fall off as he moves to get clean. Water splatters everywhere as he balances the bottles on the side to hold down the wafting curtain.

A bowl of salt waits on the sill, catching the last blue breath of day. She stirs it with her fingertip, circles widening like moons learning how to rise. Lemon peel warms the room; honey, burnt sugar, baklava breathing sweetness. A red thread rests on her wrist, warm now, bright as a promise she keeps touching. Rue seeds smoulder; the smoke loosens, unhurried, soft prayers rehearsed for a son. Beneath the pillow, cold iron lies, snipping the dark like paper dolls from air. And when the first star trembles awake in the sky, she closes her eyes, breathes in the blue-sweet air, and lets the night pour itself over her like honey from a patient spoon, cupping her in its slow, blue hush.
