Yesterday, while reading an ‘as new’ copy of ‘The Daemon Lover’ by Shirley Jackson, published by Penguin Archive, I encountered two words very emphatically scrubbed out. There’s another deletion further on.
Can anyone who knows this book tell me what the offending words are?

Then she opened the door wider and said, 'Come in,’ and then, 'Ralph!' Inside, the apartment was still full of music, and there were suitcases half-unpacked on the couch, on the chairs, on the floor. A table in the corner was spread with the remains of a meal, and the young man sitting there, for a minute resembling Jamie, got up and came across the room. ‘What about it?' he said. 'Mr Royster,' she said. It was difficult to talk against the music. ‘The superintendent downstairs told me that this was where Mr James Harris has been living.' 'Sure,' he said. 'Some-one should teach me, I guess.' 'You ought to keep your home neater,’ David said. 'You ought to get curtains at least, and keep your windows shut.' 'I never remember,' she said. Jett has the right New Year's Eve idea...
A very, very black void kitty, Jett, lies comfortably and sleepily in her favorite armchair. She is on a pile of folded towels, on top of which is an ancient remnant of my beloved cherry red terry bathrobe, still the favorite of cats. Under the many, MANY towels is a heating pad on low. The chair is a fairly beat up neutral pale green color (out of sight below is the stuffing hanging out and the years of claw marks from all three cats). Also behind her is a small stuffed rabbit friend, sometimes groomed, sometimes bitten. It's almost the 1st anniversary of us getting her tame enough with outside feeding to snatch her up off the streets and bring her in to start her new housecoat era. Mostly she thinks it's a good deal.
