#bioswale
The bioswale at the bottom of my street.

The concrete is static until damaged or reached end of life use. The bioswale requires regular maintenance to keep the plants in order or it looks terrible. See also traffic circles whose locals don’t take it upon themselves.

^^ Oooh, bioswale chicane!
November 14, 2025 at 8:31 PM
really stupid how that bioswale is positioned in such a way that water flows OUT of it
November 14, 2025 at 12:43 PM
That's fair, the bioswale would be better located on the inside curb or have the bike lane at sidewalk level
November 13, 2025 at 5:58 PM
This is a straight up construction failure. The point of that curb cut there is to convey stormwater into the planted area to slow and pretreat it before it hits the waterway.

Having that area higher than the surrounding impervious surface completely ruins the entire concept!

Wait aren't stormwater bioswales supposed to be... Downhill from the lanes they are draining?

The first pic looks like the bike lane is serving as drainage outbound from the bioswale... 😬

Stormwater runoff can flood your yard, erode soil, and carry harmful pollutants. Digging a bioswale that diverts water to a rain garden can solve this problem.

I think this person had to intentionally and carefully enter at 26th St or the Xing at the unused golf course gate rather than accidentally driving up a curb, through a big median with rock bioswale and trees. An accidental swerve would probably fuck up a car pretty quickly

“Allegedly pushing someone into a bioswale using an umbrella” is peak Portland rambunctiousness. ☂️

More power to you! I am now off to continue rewylding a bioswale! I have removed all of the invasives over the last two years! It feels great to do this today! I am planting seeds and native perennials today! 👏👏🎵🎶❤️

Agreed, our goals should be less in-fill and re-fill paving as we move forward. Beyond the bioswale, PBOT + BES are working on a pilot in this direction.

went up to Denton this weekend with some friends for the Halloween festivities (coffin racing and such)!

and spotted a few unusual inlets and some green stormwater infrastructure, I could spend all day stormwater spotting in Denton lol

4. Eminent domain the land and turn it into a bioswale.
5. Airdrop a billion Himalayan blackberry seeds on the building until all its encapsulated in thorns and sweet fruit.
6. Roundabout, think about it.

Great new sidewalk bumpout in an overlooked part of Philadelphia: the dangerous intersection of Thouron/Limekiln/Tulpehocken was rationalized with Thouron meeting Limekiln at a right angle. A Water Dept GSI bioswale (project funding source) was also installed. Plenty more to go but great progress!

My dog pooped in a bioswale this evening so for the first time in my life, I said and then heard myself say “oh no, not in the bioswale.”

It’s not that I never expected it to happen. I just thought it would be a car. Or a broken ankle.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bioswale They are awful and horrible for people with mobility issues. My parent's street was supposed to get one but I guess they successfully pointed out it was impossible to load/unload anyone with a walker or wheelchair near one.

We turned back to the pleasant narrow part. The 5.5 mi rail to trails project ended up costing $130 M. But it feels very Cadillac infrastructure We cobbled together transportation, stormwater management, parks & environmental cleanup funds to pull this off.

When we got to the part next to Slauson, it got wider, but less pleasant. Traffic noise, exhaust and more intersections with traffic lights. But the bioswales are wider. More runoff from wider road. The curbs are broken periodically to allow water to flow into the bioswales.

First, we got off at Fairview Heights station and rode the newly built rails to trails project. The bioswales with pollinator plants are great

The streetscaping on Maduson in Oak Park is really nice, would love to see this in Chicago.

To correct Nick Sortor’s statement:
The night he was arrested he’d been following & harassing women, filmed one inside her apt bldg lobby. He grabbed a burning flag & was pushed into a bioswale by a person w/an umbrella & a woman.
He was not the only one arrested. Two protesters were as well.

There's a couple clips that aren't super clear, but show him shoving someone blocking him and then him walking backwards and falling into a bioswale, losing his phone, getting it again & some sort of mild scuffle as he exits the bioswale. I haven't seem any proof anyone assaulted him.
