#Youth Unemployment
Youth unemployment stood at 14.7% in the EU/14.3% in the Eurozone in December 2025, including 13% in Greece.

Must be the first time size the Eurozone crisis that Greece has a lower youth unemployment than the UK - with Greece down from a peak at 58.9% (!) youth unemployment in 2013.
The UK age 18-24 unemployment rate has been rising since 2022 and hit a concerning 14% in December 2025

Though it's worth bearing in mind that in 2011 the rate was more than 20%...

Youth unemployment (age 16 - 24) has risen to nearly 750,000 according to today’s labour market stats.

It was a major story when it hit 1 million back in late 2011, and I think we should be starting to worry about it rising again

UK minimum wage is raising youth unemployment, Bank of England's Mann says
A sharp rise in Britain's minimum wage for younger workers over the past three years has contributed to an increase in unemployment for that age group, Bank of England policymaker Catherine Mann said in a newspaper interview on Sunday.

There's been mass youth unemployment for a while in the cities. Simply put China likely doesn't have the money to spend like the US did.

Cathie Wood of ARK said youth unemployment will improve as people "go for it" and start businesses with AI

We should all be for lowering the barrier to innovation

But there's a critical unspoken element: entrepreneurs need economic security to take long-term risk, security that UBI provides

Rather tired of the genre of post that's like "the lack of sustained nationwide protests and rioting like we're seeing in [failed state with 70% youth unemployment, hyperinflation, rolling blackouts, and an ongoing drought and famine] proves the innately satanic character of the Amerikkkan public."

Coincidentally just discussing this with @acjsissons.bsky.social today, the tangent was youth unemployment.
My industry was an early adopter of algorithmic products, and later AI. The pathway from entry level jobs where people learnt the simple products and then overtime graduated to more complex products has gone. Algos handle all simple and medium complexity products now.

The job numbers are not good if you are black or brown with 9% unemployment or higher. Not good if you are 25 and younger with so many older adults working in jobs tour youth used to do.

Doesn't apply to Japan, Japan has a very low (general AND youth) unemployment rate.

Yes, because while pay rises are popular, youth unemployment and the outcomes of low economic growth are not.

Also from speaking to family members in positions just above minimum wage, they resent having to work harder for slightly more money than someone on NMW

Youth unemployment rate is now over 16% (1 in 6). The underutilisation rate - young people wanting work or more work - is 38% ffs - 190,000 young kiwis. That's nearly half of the total. It took a fking decade for youth unemployment to recover last time. Same plan this time. No plan.

It's failing our youth particularly badly.

"The level of unemployment of people between 15 and 24 years was 16.5 percent, with the total not in education or training falling to 13.7 percent."
Bloody hell. More people out of work.

Time to stop wittering about "green shoots" and face the reality: this government is failing New Zealanders. #nzpol

Eurozone unemployment has never been lower. That’s partially good news, partially a sign of aging societies not being able to replace retiring Baby Boomers.

Retirements > entrants. Youth cohorts are smaller - that explains falling youth unemployment figures. Migration helps, but not enough.

The minimum wage is far too blunt a tool to address poverty.
And has reached a level where it is almost certainly pushing up youth unemployment.
Tax credits allow for far more targeted support to actually reduce poverty.

... people who have given up looking for work. Another 250,000 or so kiwis have some work but want more hours. When unemployment is in the mid 5s, youth rates will be well above 20%, and Māori and Pacific People rates will be at or above 10%. But, the economy is turning, are good times ahead? [2/n]
