Now is not the time for subtlety!

I appreciate both, but yes, the final version has the monitoring function of the Observatory that gives a 1984 vibe that fits with the subtlety of the intentions of Torres; even if he seems more polite and discreet compared to the draft, you can feel that the tech shouldn't be in his hands.

“They are.. something.” Scar speaks. “Cosmo is kind, but has fought off yautjas before.. yet my children are still young.. soon to have trials..” he shook his head.

Ka’lek watched both encounters, subtlety looking to the trees for just a moment before looking back.

This makes the Watergate cover-up look like an exercise in subtlety.

Del Toro’s Frankenstein is the Pan-Galactic Gargleblaster of movies - like being hit in the head with a delicate piece of lemon wrapped around a gold brick.

Beautiful to look at, sweet and sour, and no subtlety at all. And sadly, the last part is its greatest weakness.

YW. I'm not a fan of subtlety. Especially since I'm well aware there are too many people who would have written that with complete sincerity.
November 13, 2025 at 1:29 AM
Agreed. I feel somewhat conflicted. If "remove this" saves me 15 minutes of work I was going to do anyway, I'm OK with that.

But when a human turns into a different person.... a line has been crossed. That's a tough position to defend, but I do think there's some subtlety to it.

He’s not one for subtlety.

I wish folks would stop acting like subtlety is inherently better. Almost as if there’s a degree of self deprecation “well I understood the idea, so it must be too heavy handed.”

There’s a reason both scalpels and sledgehammers exist.
I see del Toro's Frankenstein taking some flack for being very obvious and on-the-sleeve about his writing, and I can understand not digging that, but he's kind of always been that way. I wouldn't go so far as to say he doesn't do subtext, but the man is not subtle. It doesn't suit him.

Subtlety is an art.

Watching Nightbreed. Clive Barker is not Mr. Subtlety when it comes to messaging.

Good video essay about media literacy and whether current Sci-Fi / Fantasy are being too obvious in their themes.

I've read a couple good and a couple GREAT books recently with pretty unsubtle themes, but I don't see that as a bad thing at all. There should be a range of subtlety. That's OK.
Do SFF authors think we are stupid now

Sometimes, an artist uses metaphors that subtlety express an image or idea that the viewer must reflect on and ponder to understand the meaning and depth of what is being conveyed.

This...doesn't need much reflection. Thanks for taking me to school!

Invicta wins, love the subtlety of the model, and the feel of weight on the coat, as it drapes the animal

I'm not talking about famous on the internet; famous never entered the chat. I'm talking about the psychology of deep dives into lore that didn't need explained as a whole culture. Lore-accurate being a driving force. Subtlety, nuance, and the mystery of an unexplained thing never happening again.

Zero subtlety, or sign of anything more to him as a person beyond wanting to fuck

A *hint* dropped, among the rest of the bio describing a well-adjusted, interesting person goes farther than "I'm here to fuck, and you need to be on the same page or you're wasting our time"

And 45 human yrs old???

Damned by their complete lack of subtlety

Subtlety is dieing in the age of social media.
Hey! Here is a really important distinction:

satire

vs.

being shitty, but in a jokey tone

Is it possible you might need people with an understanding of culture (poetry, prose, literature, art) in your moderation team? Or at least people that are able to understand context, nuance, subtlety? Perhaps people that can use Google search before making authoritarian decisions... You know...?

Subtlety is a great tool to certain ends! Not all ends. It's not actually mandatory. Sometimes you have to let the Id rip.
November 12, 2025 at 9:12 PM
I can see that being an issue. I just found the lack of any subtlety and also how reductive and one dimensional it felt, to be an issue across the whole film.
