Can verify that Not Just Bikes does a great job introducing the work of Urban3 in explaining how sprawl is subsidized by dense, mature neighborhoods all over the country. #strongtowns #urban3 #notjustbikes
WATCH: If you really STILL don’t understand how car-dependent suburbia is HEAVILY SUBSIDIZED by downtown & all the urban parts of your city, please watch this EXCELLENT video by #NotJustBikes helped by #UrbanThree & @StrongTowns.org. And then please SHARE it as much as possible. youtu.be/7Nw6qyyrTeI

Albuquerque showed up.

At the first LUPZ hearing on the pro-homes IDO amendments, 38 people spoke in support, more than double the opposition. A broad, citywide coalition made the case for practical, incremental housing reform. More to come. #abq #albuquerque #strongtowns #yimby #nmtrue

Probably the big difference vis a vis housing is tha Strongtowns treats housing as a chronic condition whereas YIMBY treats it as an acute condition.

*Technically* both are true. But the latter requires a rapidity of response that are incompatible in the short-term with the former.

The potential for conflict of interest without going full tilt paid shill is bad enough.

Like, if a half dozen little suburbs or exurbs are strongtowns clients, and they don't want their sovereignty eroded even if it's for the greater good, he could end up stumping for them for free.

Fun conversation between me and @clmarohn of @strongtowns, motivated in part by my complaints about the transit chapter in his "Confessions of a Recovering Engineer." www.youtube.com/watch?v=JziN...

People need to unlearn some of the strongtowns propaganda. This is an org that thinks a model walkable street is the tourist district in Galena. Absolute silly business
It’s the same way in which Charles has argued against projects in low income communities in the past because projects should only be built in communities that can afford it, of course.
To do as Marohn proposes would:

• Stop nearly all transit capital construction in the US,
• Ensure transit is only ever built by wealthy jurisdictions, and
• Produce only poorly-planned, inefficient, disjointed projects.

For context, California banned locally-imposed owner-occupancy requirements for ADUs statewide in 2023. This ain’t rocket science.

The StrongTowns way of doing things would have each jurisdiction spend a decade learning well-established lessons, or doing nothing.

I take StrongTowns' general ethos that the best reforms are local seriously and what not, but that mostly ignores that a lot of municipalities are intractably insane with regards to housing, and that forcing them to be minimally competent is, in fact, possible to a degree.

Biking and walking infrastructure is the highest returning transportation investment a local government can make.

It’s not even close.

Volume up!

The dirty secret about🚦in our cities… if we lowered speed limits, we wouldn’t need 🚦, we’d actually get places faster… and we’d save 💰. Thx @clmarohn @StrongTowns

North Carolina politicians are slowly acknowledging that suburban sprawl is NOT a fiscally sustainable model.

Our friends at @strongtowns tell elected officials to use "tax value per acre" as a metric for fiscal sustainability.

Does your city councilor understand the math?

Chuck is also against massive new transportation infrastructure projects no matter the method of transportation. It seems mostly due to modern costs.

But financial resilience is the Strongtowns focus. I think it hasn’t led to a focused mass transit message from them besides “bikes and buses”.

I’ve often heard misconceptions of @NewUrbanism, & frankly blamed much of them on the organization/movement not doing enough to disseminate info about itself.

But now I see incorrect things people say about @strongtowns as the movement grows. Can’t blame that on an info vacuum.

I watch a lot of NotJustBikes and StrongTowns on YouTube. It's so hard for me to imagine my life better than it is now so seeing these examples of how other places already actually do better makes it more real. I believe it's attainable here if we demand it.
