The Sixteenth Window. In Miss Stevenson's walled gardens, opposite the church, there was a plum tree which always blossomed in the very depths of winter, even in the snows & the sharp frosts & the fierce raging storms racing in from the Channel. According to legend, one Christmastide, many centuries ago, when the village was known for its Abbey, Thomas à Becket came to visit both the Abbot & an old friend from London whose rambling manor cottage was known for its fine hospitality & soft beds. When walking one morning in the orchards by the church, he had one of his attacks of indigestion & leaned against a young plum tree in his agony. Miraculously, a silver cup of whey appeared in the branches. It soothed his pain in moments, and ever since, the tree had blossomed in pale, wintry splendour each December. Sometimes the first flowers unfurled on Christmas Day, sometimes on the very blade of the New Year, but never once on the anniversary of Becket's death on the 29th.

In an effort at something good on the internet today: A thread on Mr KJC, gingerbread architect of the early 21st century.

Mr KJC got his beginnings like so many gingerbread architects: with a kit house for the kids. Kind of fun but the premade pieces are dry and nasty, only technically edible.
