My father in 1945. In Naval Intelligence, he was in charge of the French coast, locking the D-Day invasion plans up the night before, had survived a plane crash in the Libyan desert, being bombed out of a Cairo hospital & was the first person Ian Fleming asked to join the Commandos. #remembranceday

On the cusp of WWII, in 1938, my grandfather Charles W. Bridgen shot a colour film of his journey to revisit the Northern Front. It documents a Europe on the brink of war, still scattered with the fragments of the last. The full film is on Youtube here: youtube.com/watch?v=esA9...
And in the Sky the Larks: 1930s Colour Footage of the Western Front & Northern France. WWI.

One of the best people to follow on Bluesky - her stories create a world of enchantment. This post is a little different, a film showing the world as it was, balanced precariously between two devastating wars.

Wolf was splashing happily in a very hot mustard bath in front of the parlour fire. Old Fox had installed a lovely bathroom upstairs a number of years ago, but Wolf much preferred an old-fashioned affair where one's wallowing was by candlelight and the peaceful hiss and crackle of the hearth.

All Souls' Day, and in the blue dusk light, carrying a lantern, Old Fox walked down to the churchyard. A barn owl called down from the tower, and was answered somewhere in the trees.

Once upon a time, there was a Little Girl who wore a velvet hood as red as rowan-berries. Her best friend was a Wolf who made her laugh & brought her books about the world & little chocolate cakes & cherries in the season & walked with her in the forest where the bad men were.
