The 2021 #BCFloods showed us the cost of delay, but four years later we are still unprepared. "By leaving the [BC flood strategy] unfunded, the province is forcing local governments to compete for scraps through a broken system," writes Lina Azeez @watershedwatchbc.bsky.social. #bcpoli
Opinion: Do we need another billion-dollar flood before B.C. acts?
Flood strategy to help communities prepare for climate disasters has no funding and municipalities don't have tax base to pay for upgrades.

Flood watches and warnings are in place for many parts of BC. Stay away from rivers and potentially unstable riverbanks. Don't travel unless you have to in impacted areas and follow all evacuation orders and alerts. Visit EmergencyInfoBC.gov.bc.ca and DriveBC.ca for the latest info.

I've loved Sigourney Weaver ever since one of my all-time favorite movies, ALIEN. Couldn't resist going all fanboy on her yesterday & asking for a photo. She told me she's now in the cast of The Mandalorian. Talk about bad timing: she's now in that galaxy far, far away, years after I checked out! 💔

When Canada says its energy will be “green” they are talking about trying to decarbonize upstream emissions, during extraction, production & processing. As @chrishatch.bsky.social notes, 80% of emissions come from burning fossil fuels. /1

Climate action delivers all sorts of co-benefits. Yet while cities worldwide often trumpet the economic rewards of climate action, they regularly fail to report the many health benefits. A new study from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.

I'll admit that I occasionally watch Forged in Fire (a reality show where people make edged weapons under time pressure—don't judge 😄). One of the things I find particularly interesting is how the contestants continually make the same mistakes that brought down contestants in previous shows.

"The obstacles to limiting warming to below ever-more-dangerous levels remain political, rather than physical or technological."

But it won't be done with CO₂ removal (CDR) technologies because the obstacles to scaling CDR are political, social, financial, physical, and technological.
Bill Gates’s climate comments are a dangerous distraction
People do not have to dismiss or exaggerate the climate threat to justify concerted action.

As @glenpeters.bsky.social says, we're way off target for any 1.5°C scenario.

To see how far off, each of the red/green bars represents the decrease in CO₂ emissions during COVID. Even if we achieved that from now until the end of 2030, we would still miss our 1.5°C target by a significant margin.
