“Converting car lanes on wider roadways into protected cycle tracks, will not only add charm and character to roads presently devoid of both, but, most importantly, they will serve as the major arteries from which a cohesive network of bike lanes can grow.”

THREAD. I don't know what there is left to say about the New York Times and Democrats, but documenting their support for authoritarianism still feels important. If there's any chance to walk back from the fascist cliff, we must see why things like today's article are so dangerous.

Cars have WILDLY changed expectations for speed of everyday mobility. When cities started implementing speed limits c.1900, the cyclist in this scenario would have been exceeding common limits by >100%. Now everyone is supposed to get out of the way so cars can go at least 25mph on all city streets.
Me: Drivers almost kill bicyclists through their recklessness and don't give a shit

This person: But one time, I had to slow down for a bike!

Once again, our "entitlement" is us not wanting to die. How dare we, right?

The blind zone on a Chevy Suburban is much, much bigger now than 20 years ago. The same is true for all 6 models that researchers recently examined.

Bigger blind zones --> More pedestrian deaths (which have surged in the last 20 years)

Clear-cutting our national forests is mandatory. Every year for the next nine years, 1 million more trees than the previous year must be cut. By the end, the annual timber harvest will have doubled.

That's 45 million trees.

Plus at least 40 long-term timber-sale contracts.

Damn‼️ Federal agents blew a door off for this?

Federal agents blasted their way into an LA home where Jenny Ramirez lives with her boyfriend and two kids.

She heard the blast while checking on her 6-year-old, with her 1-year-old in her arms.

Ramirez says everyone in the home is a U.S. citizen.

The masked agents pull up quickly. They jump out of unmarked vans. They wear blue jeans or battle fatigues. They approach Latinos, yelling and carrying assault rifles. If someone runs, they’re taken. If they don’t answer a question, they’re taken. If they can’t produce papers, they’re taken.

Lots of focus on the imbalance between what blue states and cities send red states in terms of their tax dollars, but don't lose focus on the dehumanizing language comparing people to vermin, something history has seen before. We're in a bad place as a nation.
“[These] inner-city rats, they live off the federal government. And that’s one reason we’re $37 trillion in debt. And it’s time we find these rats and we send them back home, that are living off the American taxpayers, that are working very hard every week to pay taxes.” www.al.com/politics/202...

Birthright citizenship is a Constitutional RIGHT. Any attack on it is an attack on us all.

This is an attempt by far-right justices to attack immigrant communities and remove protections from any American who questions Trump.

Your rights are nonnegotiable. We can’t compromise on that basic fact.
