Fascism dehumanizes segments of the population by singling them out for public abuse and persecution.
By target these groups, it limits the capacity for empathy among other citizens, leading to the justification of inhumane treatment, from repression of freedom, imprisonment, and much more.

The unspoken assumption is that you are a woman who is doing it for the love of the game and that your husband makes the real money so it's okay to post positions requiring an MLIS and think you'll be just fine with only making $15-$19 an hour.
Librarianship has never paid well enough for the education required.

In this moment - where the rent is impossible to cover solo - it is even worse.

E-rate and the Universal Service Fund are essential to rural communities, making access to broadband internet possible in schools and libraries. But will they remain legal under the current administration? Read more from @amlibraryassoc.bsky.social:

Library Advocates Show Up for E-Rate

As a scholar, as a teacher, and now as a museum educator, Chronicling America has been invaluable.

Beyond that, though, it's OURS. We paid for it. It's a public good.
Some sad confirmation from @bcgl.bsky.social while I was at UW last week—the National Digital Newspaper Program—which builds Chronicling America—has been shut down

Historical newspapers are probably the archival material most used by the general public—for genealogy, local history—it’s such a loss

Make art. Make bad art. Make queer art. Make stupid art. Make sublime art. Make art of a chicken quesadilla meal. Your art has value no shareholder can touch.
So what? The literary world is always in the first detonation blast zone. Run towards the searing light. You don't want to live in the world without the arts. Become a writer.

This is Cuomo through and through, from the total lack of understanding of libraries and public goods to blaming a nameless volunteer for his failings. Just disgusting.
The Cuomo campaign reportedly asked public library union leaders in a recent meeting if they'd considered *charging a fee* for library services, alarming some library workers.

Asked about the incident, a Cuomo spokesperson blamed a campaign volunteer.

FYI, I collected links to what the IMLS funds in most of each of the US states and they're in here so you can know on a state and sometimes even local level what is going to be severely impacted very very soon.
DOGE has just completely gutted the IMLS, firing all staff, closing down their email addresses, and leaving any funding for 2025 in question.

There is a LOT of reporting on IMLS right now, but it's being done by people who know what it is. The DOE being dismantled is overshadowing this and that's being done INTENTIONALLY.

But anyway, DOGE is in the IMLS offices right now destroying it.

Say goodbye to interlibrary loans + more.

NEW — Keith Sonderling, Trump’s Deputy Secretary of Labor, has been named the Acting Director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), an agency source tells me. He’ll arrive tomorrow at their office with DOGE and their security detail.

We can usually dodge buying it in Libby but patrons can and do mistakenly put Notify Me tags on deceptively titled slop available in Overdrive Marketplace. It's a big problem with Hoopla.
