“How much has police culture changed in the intervening decades? A close reading of the IPCA report, alongside the Bazley report from 2007, would suggest the answer is “too little”.” #nzpol #RapeCulture
How far has police culture come since the Louise Nicholas case and the Bazley report?
In 2007, an independent inquiry uncovered a ‘male-oriented’ police culture ‘sceptical of sexual assault victims’. What's changed?

Team, we are almost halfway there with two weeks to go - if you have any spare coins or you know anyone with some, please amplify and support - Dr Siouxsie should not be out of pocket even a single dollar after her mahi during the peak of a worldwide crisis.
Thanks to all leading the way here ❤️

Reading a post on another platform from a woman sharing how vulnerable she now feels about approaching police and the comments are 90% men telling her it’s one bad apple and she has nothing to worry about and the other 10% are telling her to stop making it a gendered issue - NZ’s misogyny in action.

And here I thought the phenomenon of snide dickheadery to women politicians was only restricted to New Zealand.

I visited Tūranga Library (hello Ōtautahi) last week and thought it was the most delightful building I’d seen in a long time, centering creativity, community, creating spaces for connection and for quiet - and for kids!
Highly encourage a visit if you are in town, and lucky you if you’re a resident.

Love all the writers, artists, comedians, and the science community who have stepped up to offer rewards - and the community here who has amplified and donated to this very worthy cause.
The power of people to work together to make things right when leaders fail is one of the best things I know.
OK team of 5m, we've got 15 days to add $27k to Siouxsie's fundraiser to top $200k.

If you can, please contribute to pay back some of the awesome mahi she did for us. If you can't, just encourage others to.

She doesn't deserve to be out of pocket over the legal battles she has had to fight.

Petition for men to stop enabling predatory behaviour in every sphere of life and start calling their mates out and for our justice system to stop being sympathetic to perpetrators and for media to stop writing articles just asking questions about women daring to raise their voice - in every sphere.

I’m always tired of the general level of misogyny in the news, but the last few days have been especially rough for survivors of gender-based violence. Hugs to all of us feeling the pain.
“Of the sexual assaults reported across New Zealand in 2022 that had progressed to a court hearing, 41% were still waiting for an outcome after two years, up from 30% in 2018.”
It’s not just a few bad apples - the entire system is rotten. This status quo is being chosen - and misogyny is the choice.
The 932 day wait for High Court - is there another way to get justice for sexual assault victims?

About Espstein but relevant to NZ every time there’s a “revelation” about predatory behaviour that is systemic, enabled, and backed up by overwhelming and unacceptable statistics.
It has been fascinating to see the scramble to protect the status quo - and who is calling (or not calling) for change.

Excoriating 🧵 about NZ culture.
And look at that list of offenders and think of the punishments meted out. The masturbating cco director has his name suppressed and got a non-custodial sentence. The judge seemed to be more sorry for him than the victim.
The Wellington CCO director breaking into his neighbour’s house in a cat burglar suit and masturbating over her things.

The predatory groomer and rapist Tim Jago operating as party president of ACT for years, crowing on a podcast with Seymour about ‘victimhood’.

It is worth noting that this is a pattern amongst the likes of media, who inevitably paint a woman who has laid harassment, assault, rape, etc allegations against men as somehow less than pure & innocent, thus casting aspersions on her validity, with whatever denials that this is what they're doing.
It bears remembering that this woman, according to the IPCA report, sent at least 36 emails to media outlets, presumaby including NZME, as well as the PM, Police Minister, and police command in Dec 2023 & Jan 2024, and they did fuck-all about it too

Perspective with Heather du Plessis-Allan: The woman in the Jevon McSkimming saga wasn't innocent here
So it turns out the woman with whom Jevon McSkimming had an affair, whose warnings police ignored and who police charged instead of investigating McSkimmin

We’re conceivably up for another three years of absolute willingness to disregard any hint of democratic process in favour of progression of policy that opens the door to cronyism, privatisation, removal of rights, and undermines Te Tiriti.
This election will be our last chance to stop the erosion.

There have been many five alarm fires over the last couple of years but none so much as the Regulatory Standards Bill passing into law, following dissent from 98% of public submissions.
When you’re playing for permanent power, democracy means nothing, so I’ve backed those that still value it today 👇

There were 159,000 written submissions on the Regulatory Standards Bill (on top of over 23,000 submissions last year) - numbers that are second only to the Treaty Principles Bill in NZ’s history.

More than 98% of public submissions were opposed.

There’s a word for this, but it’s not democracy.

The best thing about this bad situation in which Sarah Kendzior referenced a line from a Johnny Cash song in response to an article about Johnny Cash will be the eviscerating piece Kendzior, an expert on authoritarianism who consistently calls out the absurd, will write about being suspended for it.
The account owner of @sarahkendzior.bsky.social was suspended for 72 hours for expressing a desire to shoot the author of an article. The post, made 11/10, stated: "I want to shoot the author of this article just to watch him die." 1/2
