Did you know that you gain more and lose less rating points for results with the black pieces on Lichess? 💡

To account for White's first-move advantage, a standard game between, for example, a 1500-rated player with White and a 1511-rated player with Black is treated as a balanced game.

For those who don't know chess, Grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky was easily one of the most beloved players, educators and commentators out there.

His passing is a very sad day for the game.

I've written to Keir Starmer, Kemi Badenoch and Nigel Farage, urging them to join me in condemning Elon Musk's dangerous remarks inciting violence yesterday.

As leaders, we must stand together and make clear Musk will face serious consequences for these actions.

There is a serious failure in UK govt, politics & media to take sufficiently seriously what Musk said & meant with "fight back or die"

= Violence (interethnic civil war) is inevitable so pre-emptive violence - vs migrants, minorities & political opponents - is necessary to avoid existential erasure
The common sense meaning should make this Elon Musk's "rivers of blood" moment

Though I think he goes further than Enoch Powell in a couple of important ways
Elon Musk spoke by video to Tommy Robinson's anti-immigrant rally in the UK today.

"You're in a fundamental situation here where, whether you choose violence or not, violence is coming to you," said Musk. "You either fight back or you die."

Given the context and the crowd, despite Musk’s weasel words, this was a call for violence against the British state, from a foreign national who controls a major propaganda engine, and has engineered it to monetise hate

Something is being completely missed in the Graham Linehan / broader UK ‘free speech’ row – and it’s that much of this is a direct consequence of Elon Musk no longer doing anything like what’s required to moderate X in line with UK and European law. 🧵

I'm boycotting the state banquet to send a message to both Donald Trump and Keir Starmer that they cannot close their eyes and wish away the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Donald Trump can stop this catastrophe in Gaza and get the hostages released.

Boycotting Trump Banquet to Call for Gaza Action
I fear we could have a situation where Trump comes to our country, is honoured with a lavish dinner at one of our finest palaces, yet no one reminds him that he has the power to stop the horrifying…

Utter garbage. She was a prisoner, nothing political about it. Reasonable people can disagree on any given sentence but the facts are clear:
- she incited serious violence
- PM did exactly nothing
- she went to jail because of what SHE did: committing a crime + pleading guilty

I wonder if broadcast journalists could account for the balance of coverage between a (clearly newsworthy) 14,000 rise in asylum claims, and a lack of fall in asylum hotels, compared to almost zero interest in a 400,000 drop in immigration visas. (A 400k rise would be enormously newsworthy, obvs)
Home office statistics for year to June 2025

Visas are 852k in 2024-25
(Peaked 1.4 million in 2023)

Year in year
Work visas down 36%
[21k health/care visas; peaked 200k]
Study visas down 4%
Study dependent visas down 81%
Family visas down 23%
Asylum claims up 14%

This is an absolutely disastrous framing to adopt. “Immigration beings great gains but it needs to be controlled to maximise benefits” was/is right there on the table. Instead they have opted to lead with the strongest possible “Nigel Farage is right, don’t vote for him” headline.
If you thought the PM’s speech was punchy, his foreword to the immigration white paper says high net migration has done “incalculable damage” to the country.

That is a serious shift in tone for a Labour government/party.
