It would be nice if people could stop acting like DEI is an only a moral good.

DEI strengthens organizations. People from diverse backgrounds bring new ways of solving problems and serving people.

DEI isn’t a gift to diverse people. It’s a gift to the orgs that hire us.

I receive a lot of feedback on social media asking me to keep politics out of science. But what they really mean is "keep the status quo" and "don't challenge a notion about society and science that makes me more comfortable"

The society we live in was designed to uplift certain groups and marginalize others. The system works perfectly. Eliminating DEI work in the name of meritocracy and unification is making sure that the system continues to work as it was designed to work for the people it was designed to work for.

Well the award for most cowardly, boot-lickingest academic society has squarely gone to the American Society of Microbiology, who has taken down features of various non-white scientists. Absolutely pathetic behavior. Those articles are now coming up as “under review”. Truly sickening cowardice here.

In addition to supporting DEI and collaborating with local communities, scientists should use indigenous names and common names when describing species, study sites, etc. Indigenous people deserve respect when research is conducted on their land. #Science #MarineScience #Academia

Scientists can and should lead the charge in equity by committing to DEI work despite federal rollbacks by the Trump admin. These actions are vital for the integrity and equity of our research, sci comm, and impact on society #DEI #STEM

Marginalized communities face the worst climate impacts. Trump repealed the Equal Employment Opportunity Act + dismantled DEI initiatives - this WILL exacerbate injustice and inequality in climate research/policy. Diversity is necessary for equity in climate solutions. #DEI #environmentaljustice

Are there any BIPOC marine mammal scientists open to connecting with an early career scientist to discuss career development and navigating racism in the field?

Nothing bad has ever come from NOT diversifying your economic portfolio. Can't foresee this negatively impacting the country at all.
President Donald Trump has ordered the federal government to stop all permits for wind energy projects, including all offshore wind development in the U.S. and wind projects on federal lands, @jael.bsky.social reports.

I just donated, and I encourage you to consider doing the same!
Since announcing this, tiktok went down, came back, & blasted Trump propaganda 2x. The internet will be an even tougher place for science.

I have enough to fund ~5 of these projects. More than 5 should be funded. They're going to be v important.

Help us fund more if you can.

An artist named Noah (@liveforlines an Instagram) made this whale tail art on Wickaninnish Beach about a week ago. It's bull kelp and driftwood... presumably when the next storm rolls in it'll be scattered across the beach, again. #Ucluelet #Tofino #VancouverIsland #PNW
