Basking sharks visit Tipperary!

A new exhibition by Irish artist Tom Meskell opened last weekend in Tipperary Town. In 'Basking - the Nursery', the focal points are two juvenile sharks, each about 2.5 metres in length, suspended in blue-green light amidst the sounds of the ocean.

Many thanks to Terry Flanagan from @rte.ie Mooney Goes Wild programme for joining us at the International Basking Shark Conference ATU Galway City in August this year to capture the meeting, talk to some of the participants and share the excitement.

I talked to a guy selling heat pumps, which if someone installs, can qualify them for a tax credit due to the IRA. This tax credit now expires at the end of the year due to the GOP. That's a huge selling point to get one ASAP.

He had no idea about it or the IRA.
Utterly bizarre to describe climate change policy as some kind of radical-left albatross.

The IRA contained precisely the kind of 'kitchen table' programs everyone says Democrats should focus on — and they're popular!

The problem was that Americans *didn't know* what the IRA was or who passed it.

One of the many things @ninalakhani.bsky.social does so well is show the very real, very now cost of climate change at the most human level. This story is devastatingly good: www.theguardian.com/environment/...
Americans are dying from extreme heat. Autopsy reports don’t show the full story
Official reports are likely to overlook heat’s role in a death. As US temperatures rise, experts say the true toll needs to be counted

This article has haunted me since I read it. The threat of extreme heat is not understood enough and the solutions we need often require long-term changes that need to start NOW, especially in cities

I get that the news cycle is packed right now, but I just heard from a colleague at the Smithsonian that this is fully a GIANT SQUID BEING EATEN BY A SPERM WHALE and it’s possibly the first ever confirmed video according to a friend at NOAA

One of the best conferences I've ever been too (but I'm probably biased here). So proud to have put this together with the amazing @irishbaskingshark.bsky.social team.
Reflecting on the International Basking Shark Conference last month, we are all still so inspired by the energy and passion captured in one weekend.
