This is why the @nws.noaa.gov and their storm spotters measure snow depth on a snow board (which of course I didn’t have time to setup)

- ~4” in cylindrical rain gauge
- ~5” on grass
- 3” on patio table
- 2.5” on the patio

20 years ago today: #Katrina was a monster Category 5 hurricane over the Gulf of Mexico with maximum sustained winds of 150kts (173mph) and a 902mb central pressure. By this point, the aftermath was already very well predicted...

Proposed NOAA budget zeros out ALL climate laboratories and cooperative institutions.

GFDL, NSSL, GML, etc.

This appears to also end the US greenhouse gas sampling network, including at Mauna Loa, the oldest continuous carbon dioxide monitoring site on Earth.

For #worldbicycleday be mindful cycling is claiming more lives than ever.

We *know* how to protect our neighbors. The tools are available and proven. But as a locality we simply choose to not make those interventions.

Certainly didn't get as much as other areas, but had 3.18" in the rain gauge this morning. About 2" of that fell between 5pm and 11pm last night

The thunderstorm that went thru southern Pennsylvania / western Maryland along the Mason-Dixon last night was no joke

Some folks in Franklin County have an Estimated Time of Restoration for power that is April 22!!!

If any broadcast/private sector folks want to help with what's going on... my idea:

Show your audience what the weather show or one slide looks like without the NWS/NOAA. Blank.

Show your clients/higher ups what products you can offer them w/o the NWS/NOAA. Nada.

Losing 200 employees to early resignations with no sign of backfilling will be a detriment to public safety nationally.
Just in: Additional losses due to early resignations & retirements are 870 NOAA wide & 200 NWS. It is crucial to understand these positions will NOT be back filled for the foreseeable future. NOAA’s mission (operations & research) supports both public safety and the economy. God help us. 🙏
Let’s recap: Over the last two months, hundreds of probationary NOAA employees were fired, then un-fired and immediately placed on administrative leave, then fired again. This is not a way to build a sustainable workforce, nor maintain morale within the existing one. The cruelty is the point.

Shout it from the hills and remember:

There is no standardization across weather apps.

Nada. None.

Anyone who can write code can write a weather app.

Some have more human oversight than others.

Some software is better than others.

Some rely on just one dataset.

Let the buyer beware.
Why does my apple weather app show zero precipitation? What model do they pull from? Seems way off base!

About 8.5” collected in the gauge. ~7” depth in the grass, 5” on the propane tank cover, 3+” on the driveway

3.5” on the snow board at 7am. Definitely had some compaction with sleet on top

I wouldn’t be surprised if it compacted even more with the heavy mix we’ve received over the last few hours

As a recreational road cyclist who sees this up close & personal, and as someone who’s first vehicle was a light duty pickup in the 90s, I think about this often

Pick-up trucks in particular have gotten so big
Car bloat is a disease – and it’s spreading.

Here are a few of the stories I wrote in 2024 about dangerously huge vehicles. 🧵

This year GM killed the Chevy Malibu, the last sedan available to Americans from the Big Three. 4/5 new US cars are SUVs or pickups.

Detroit killed the sedan. We may all live to regret it
GM ending production of the Chevy Malibu underscores that the Big Three are done with sedans. But consumers may not flock to expensive SUVs in response.
