I hope everyone has good year end holidays. As we go into a shaky period with the arts in flux and a lot of people are suffering, please never forget the power of your mind, and the joy of engaging in meaningful process. Every day you have the most powerful machine in existence inside your own head.

Happy holidays one and all!
Fun fact: Jimmy was a concept before Nunsense, but I never got around to work on his story.

Every artist, get more self indulgent NOW! Draw your ships kissing, draw your blorbos, draw that idea you’ve been putting off (you’re good enough to do it!!!), redraw that old art, draw yourself wearing a cool outfit, draw a better world- just draw!!!

This and the discussion about how academics can now just read AI summaries of things really drives home how much these guys always confuse the product for the goal. You don't do a coloring sheet because you want to have a colored sheet at the end!!! The coloring is the point!!!
This is just sad.

At this point, if you are not disclosing that you used AI, you know that your audience doesn't want it

Keep going. Be meaner. Aim whatever lizard-brain impulse you have towards cruelty and violence in this direction.
We can do even more.

“AI is ok as long as it’s not taking anyone’s job” and whose work is it trained on. Did you forget that it’s a bunch of stolen fucking shit? Are we moving the goalposts already? “it’s sticking around so you have to get used to it, be realistic” no I don’t. Eat my shit and hair

AI has actively made life worse for literally everyone

- tech is now more expensive
- you cannot trust most media of reality anymore
- programs barely function
- energy prices
- literal psychosis
- your voice can be literally stolen for evil
- more spyware

but hey, you can avoid paying an artist.

“We just use AI to generate ideas for our concept art”

Yes, you're just using a plagiarism machine that spits out a mishmash of creativity and ideas from thousands of creative people who didn't consent to their work being used in this way. And you're using this as the foundation for your game. 💀

Just so I'm clear on this, computer memory has tripled in price because a bunch of it that hasn't been produced yet has been ordered to populate GPUs that aren't installed in data centers that aren't built yet in order to service a demand that doesn't exist to make profits that don't happen.

I've made it a personal goal to stop using the term "content" when referring to media made by artists. The word implies mass-produced filler and calling someone's hard work their "content" has started to feel kinda like an insult. Like human art made strictly for quick consumption
the enthusiasm for generative AI would not have been possible without prior decades of capitalist conditioning to view works of art as products, rather than acts of culture and shared human life
I think the fundamental gap here is that non-creative people think that creative people make things for the end product, when in fact it’s the act of creation and not the end point that makes it worthwhile.

I hope there's enough pushback that Vincke reconsiders his position. I would really like to enjoy the great work all the devs at Larian are doing without upper management forcing this unnecessary shit into their workflow.

Using gen ai for text and asset placeholders is not solving a problem; games have been made for decades with regular placeholders. studios using AI this way are just testing the water to see what more they can get away with - which will inevitably mean laying off skilled workers, to make worse games

the faux-AI evangelists see the artistic process as a race to get to a finished product, instead of something valuable in itself. the process is where you develop those skills you don't have yet, it cannot be skipped, it is where the art happens
